You probably made a New
Year's resolution to keep a good
budget this year and now you're
wondering how you'll do it. The
home economists with Canada
Agriculture, Ottawa have several
suggestions to help you in your
food shopping.
Take time before you go to the
store to plan what food you will
need for the coming meals and
make a shopping list. Then stick
to the list once you're in the store.
The weekly food advertisements
will help you determine the best
buys if you can check them before
shopping.
Once in the store, select your
food purchases according to use.
Most of the fresh, canned and
frozen fruits and vegetables are
sold according to quality. They
carry a grade mark, such as
Canada Fancy, Canada Choice and
Canada Standard for canned
goods, which indicates that
product meets certain
requirements set by the Canada
Department of Agriculture.
By knowing the different grades
and what the difference between
grades means, you can buy one
grade for appearance and another
for flavor. For information on the
grading of foods, write for the
booklet "Buy By Glade"
publication 1305, available free
from Information DiviSion,
Canada Department of
Agriculture, Ottawa, 10A OM
Brand names are often helpful
in selecting quality products too.
Some processing firms use one
brand name on their best quality
products and another on those of
lower quality. Some stores have
their oWil brand name on products
Which are sometimes offered at
attractive prides. It always pays
to compare prices of different
brands carrying the same grade
name because they should be of
similar quality.

Truck licences, including those
eligible for a reduced farm rate,
will go on sale throughout the
province on March 1, Charles
MacNaughton, Minister of
Transportation and
Communications announced
today.
The expiry date for truck and
trailer registration in Ontario is
March 31.
The reduced fee will be
available to farmers eligible for a
grant under the Farm Tax
Reduction Programme. Such
farmers occupy property
assessed as a farm and 11 acres
or more in size. A farm of less
than 11 acres may qualify if it
produced an income of $2,000 or
more the preceding year.
The new fees schedule will
apply to trucks registered at
6,000 pounds gross weight or
more operated by farmers for
personal transportation and the
transportation of their own
products and equipment.
The program of reduced fees
was developed after consultation
with the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food and other representatives of
the farming industry.
Some examples of the new fees
are: 6,000 pounds gross weight
reduced from $44 to $37; 8,000
pounds from $61 to $41; 28,000
pounds from $295 to $100; and
42,000 pounds from $470 to $144.
Similar reductions apply

For vehicles of 5,000 pounds
gross weight and under, the fee
remains at $30.
Upon application for a truck
registration under the new
schedule, farmers will be
required to sign a declaration
certifying they are eligible for the
reduced rate. Declaration forms
will be available at all licence
bureaus in the province.
available at all motor vehicle
licence agencies.
Cinder the new regulations, it
will still be possible to register a
vehicle for three, six and nine-
month periods as well as the
yearly basis. Lower fees will also
apply to quarterly registration,
Farmers are encouraged to

There are' certain things to
