URLING Sunday evening began another ew phase in winter recreation in e village, when a men's curling tub started, Jim Garrett and eith Brandon are helping to struct the group of non-curlers. Monday afternoon the ladies ok over the rink under the capable guidance of Betty Garrett and Wynn Graham. You are invited to come out to the arena and throw a few rocks with your neighbours. You never know if you might like curling until you try it, COUNCIL MEETING The regular council meeting Was held in the Municipal Building, Monday evening, Jan. 17, with Reeve Oddleifson, all councillors and the Clerk present, Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Clerk Graham and adopted. Councillor Frank McFadden reported the furnace in the Old Town Hall had been inspected, repaired and is now working well. An additional grant of $5,170 has been approved by the Government for the village, over and above the initial $1,500 already received for the Winter Works Incentive program to assist the unemployed. A letter received from the Department of Transportation and Communications, O.W.R.C. division, regarding the dumping R. H. Fitzgerald, Regional Registrar, SOUTH WESTERN AREA. of snow filled with salt and Calcium in the lakes and rivers. (This practice has never been carried out in the village.) However a question was raised as to where it should be deposited so that it eventually does not enter our waterways. A letter was received from the Huron County Social Services, to direct any calls for Welfare Assistance or regarding welfare to the office in Goderich. A request for a $400 grant from the Bayfield Fire Department was read. An invitation was received relating to the Conference for Mayors and Reeves to be held in Ottawa, June 18 to 21. The Citator renewal of $8.00 was approved for which the Municipality will receive printed copies of all passed government bills that have received royal ascent and immediate access to new acts passed by the government. A letter came from the Ontario Election Office concerning the Liquor Vote held Dec. 6, thanking them for the manner in which the vote was conducted and informing them the outcome (well over 60 percent in favour of two of the three issues) would appear in the next issue of the Ontario Gazette. A request from Huron County Library Board regarding the cost of operation of the Library for the past year. (Incidentally, in a previous report from H.C.L.A. more books were loaned in Bayfield per capita than in any other library in Huron County.) The next regular meeting of council will be held Monday, Feb. at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building. BROWNIES By Beverly Semple On Tuesday night we opened with out Brownie and Sixes Songs. We had our meeting in the hall as it was too cold in the big room where we meet. Beverly Semple was fairy queen. Dianne Garrett's Pixies and Kathy McFadden's Gnomes had the best sixes on inspection. We had a discussion on our badges, and several of the girls on *National R&enu Revonue, hational, Taxation (moot their golden hand are going to Work on their cooking badges this week. Karen Talbot and Laura Taman wrapped a parcel. Fluffy Owl reviewed law, promise and motto with the Tweenies and read them a story. The Tweenies are to bring a brush and comb to our next meeting and demonstrate how they care for their hair. We closed with a game, Brownie goodbye song and prayer. LIONS CLUB Bayfield Lions Club held their regular bi-monthly meeting, Tuesday evening, Jan. 11, at the Tank and Tummy, in the form of a dinner meeting. Thank yous were expressed by members to the committees in charge of the First Winter Carnival, held on New Year's weekend and - termed a most successful venture. Serious thought is being given to holding another snowmobile drag race some time in February. Plans were discussed regarding the Hayfield Lions holding a bingo for the patients in the Goderich Psychiatric Hospital on Feb. Z. OBITUARY Jack David Hammond, Hayfield, passed away suddenly, Monday, Jan. 10, 1972, in Clinton Public Hospital. He was born in Woodstock and raised and educated in Alma, Ontario. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Hammond who both predeceased him in 1965. He is survived by his wife, the former Berthena Sturgeon, whom he married on November 27, 1961. Mr. Hammond had made, his home in Bayfield for the past 16 years, and for the past five years had been an employee of Dearborn Tubing in Goderich. He was Master of Loyal Orange Lodge No. 24, Bayfield and a member of Hayfield Royal Black (Knights) Perceptory No. 1025 until his untimely demise. He was an avid sports fan and attended almost every hockey game in which the local players participated. Lodge services were conducted on Tuesday evening, Jan. 11, by County Master Lloyd Hearn of Woodham, Acting Chaplain William Mclllwain and acting Deputy-Master William Parker, of Hayfield under the direction of Bayfield L.O.L. No. 24, The funeral service took place Wednesday, Jan. I.Z, from Ball Funeral Home, Clinton, with Rev. S. Sharpies, Rector of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Clinton, officiating with burial in Hayfield Cemetery. Acting pallbearers were James Sturgeon, Clinton; Robert McCool, Londesboro; William Parker, Lindsay Smith, Cliff Utter and Donald McLeod, all of Hayfield. Bill Hutchins, Doug Zoothout, • Goderich; Donald Johnson and Pat Graham, of Bayfield, acted as flowerbearers. Friends attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs, Ken Douglas, Hespeler and Mr, and Mrs. Haig Douglas, Kitchener, along with those from Goderich, Clinton, Londesboro, Hayfield and area, Our sincere sympathy is extended to Miss Ethel Fowlie and members of her family in the loss of her sister, Miss Francis Fowlie, Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1972 and to the relatives of Gary Castle of Galt who passed away suddenly Sunday, Jan. 16, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown and family of Oshawa visited for a week recently with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd. Westlake. Mrs. Nina Weston, who makes her home with her niece, Mrs. Lloyd Westlake, was in London for a week with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Weston. Mr. Randy McPherson, Kitchener, spent last weekend with Rick Westlake. Mr. and Mrs, Joe Beechie and family, London, were in the village this past weekend after holidaying in Antigua. While ViiiM111•••• there, they spent a week with Mr, and Mrs. Archie McCardell. Mrs. McCardell is the former Margaret Edith Martin, who for many years has spent her summers at their summer home, "Boulder Lodge," here in the village. Miss Rhea Sturgeon, London, was with her parents and brothers, Mr, and Mrs, Jack Sturgeon, Bud and Andrew, this Past weekend. Mrs. Myrtle Pease and Irvin, London, were at their village home for the weekend. Mr. AU Warner and Mrs. I. Krawchuk return today (Thursday) from a five-week holiday trip to Florida. Hayfield Hockey team won over Goderich Builders 4-1 in Goderich, Sunday last. Still holding first place in the league standings. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Parker, Charlie and Kim, London, were weekend guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parker and Mrs, Jack Fraser. Hayfield hockey team coached by George Telford played two hockey games over the weekend in the Hayfield Arena, Friday evening in a game against Goderich house league they lost 4- 1; but Saturday morning our little , guys redeemed themselves in a 7- 0 shut-out over Clinton team. This is the first recorded shut-out by goalie Kenny Merner. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Scott have returned from a most enjoyable holiday in the Canadian West. They left Hayfield on Dec. 22, motoring to Calgary, Alberta, where they arrived Christmas Eve to time to spend the festive Bayfield, Wednesday, Jan, IL season with their two daughters, Miss Joyce and Miss Myrna. .010a0101•11111101..00/111...up Mr. and Mrs. Scott spent the next week with their daughters before Mrs. Scott left to fly home on Dee, 31, Mr, Scott remained until Jan, 3, then motored to Melfort, Saskatchewan, his birthplace, spending a few days there; then on to Natcam, Sask., to visit old friends and his wife's birthplace.
