Charles Straughan at the Arthur Funeral Home, Auburn, who passed away in Clinton hospital after a short illness on Thursday, December 30. Born near Auburn on January 12, 1881, she was the former Mabel B. Erratt, the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah (Welsh) Erratt. She was married to Char les Straughan who predeceased her in 1943. She was also predeceased by two sons, George, on active service in 1945 and Ross in infancy. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Vivian) Pentland, 33 McDonald Ave. E., North Bay and several nieces. Mrs. Straughan, known affectionately as Aunt Mabel to everyone in this community where she had spent her entire life until last year when she went to Blyth to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. William Knox, was a member of Knox United Church Auburn, a' life member of the U.C.W. and a charter member of the Auburn Women's Institute where she remained a member for the past 50 years. In 1956 she was presented with a Service Diploma by the Ontario Horticultural Society for her outstanding contribution to the Auburn Horticultural Society which she helped to establish. She served this society by being secretary-treasurer and recording secretary for several years. She was a valued member of the Tweedsmuir book committee of the W. I. and assisted in the writing of the history of the Auburn community. Pastor Alfred Fry conducted the services with burial taking place at Ball's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Oliver Anderson, Robert Arthur and nephews, John Bennett, Port Albert, Gary Nicholson, Seaforth, Thomas Jardin, Wingham and George Collins, Auburn. Relatives were present from North Bay, Saskatoon, Amhertsburg, Grand Bend, London and surrounding towns. Some power brakes are too sensitive, according to recent research by a U.S. team. A large attendance was held at the annual Knox United Church Sunday school Christmas concert held recently, Pastor Alfred Fry was in charge of the program and the superintendent, Mr. Gerald McDowell made a few remarks. The program was in the form of a pageant anged by Mrs. Brian Hallam. Following the program, all went to the Sunday school room where Santa appeared and lunch was served to all. Mrs. Ronald Pentland of North Bay visited her cousin, Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock, Miss Sheron Collins and Mr. George Collins. Miss Judy Arthur of Montreal is holidaying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Arthur and BY JOYCE PEPPER A well-known area resident, Mrs. John M. Richardson (former Elizabeth Riechert) passed away at South Huron Hospital, Exeter, Dec. 27, 1971, in her 90th year. She is survived by two sons, Wes of RR 5, Goderich, and Ross RR 1, Zurich; four daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Vera) O'Brien, Zurich; Mrs. Annie Ashman, Tillsonburg; Mrs. Alfred J. (Margery) Smith, London; Mrs. John (Ruth) Stanley, Goderich, and one brother, Edmund Reichert of Zurich. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and one great great grandson. The funeral was held at the Bonthron Funeral Chapel, Hensall, Dec. 30, with Rev. Don Beck officiating. Interment was made in Hensall Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Eugene O'Brien, Ron Chuter, Bill Rowe, Bob Bell, Arthur Hunter and Doug Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Keys spent a week at Christmas with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chipehase, and Jeffery in Roanoke Virginia, Mr. an,d Mrs. Archie Noakes left Jan. 2 for a four-month vacation in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. Anthony Gelderland of Ridgetown visited over the New Year holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Sim Roobal.
