A new report on poverty in
Ontario has been released and
includes the voices of people living
in poverty in Huron County. The
Interfaith Social Assistance Reform
Coalition (ISARC) penned the
report titled “Persistent Poverty:
Voices from the Margins.”
“This book really sets the record
straight about the real challenge of
living in poverty in rural areas,” says
Laura Armstrong, Community
Developer at the Huron County
Health Unit.
“There has been a perception that
life in the country is cheaper,
everyone has land and grows their
own food, and we’re all a tightly-
knit ‘happy family’. This book
identifies the realities of getting by
with a low-income in the country –
renting old farm houses with heating
bills higher than the rent, lack of
emergency supports, social
isolation.”
Armstrong goes on to say that
reaching out to others for help is a
hard decision to make in a town
where everyone knows everyone.
“Poverty is hidden in Huron County
and other rural areas for many
reasons. One is that people who
live in poverty go to great lengths
to hide it because they don’t want
to be labelled or looked down
on.”
Armstrong hopes the report will
spur on action from provincial
government, municipal government
and individuals to help eliminate
poverty. This report identifies
changes that need to be made to
social assistance rules (provincial)
but also talks about things municipal
governments can take action on to
reduce the impacts of poverty. All
Members of the Provincial
Parliament and federal Members of
Parliament in Ontario will receive a
copy.
The entire report is available
through the Huron County Library
system.

year. Long after the wrapping paper
is recycled and we have forgotten
most of what we got and who gave
it, we will remember how we felt on
Christmas, 2010.
May you feel the love that God
has for you. May you be at peace
because you know that love is
true and may you fearlessly share
that love with others. Do this
and you will have a Merry
Christmas and a very happy New
Year.
