buildings, other locations that can be
found are a bank, a post office, a
grocery store, flour mills, windmills,
lighthouses, a dress shop and a farm
with a barn and tractor.
Accompanying the buildings are
numerous miniature figurines, two
gazebos, a bridge, phone booths,
streetlights and, of course a hockey
rink with a fully functional game of
pick-up going on.
After the set-up day, it takes a day
of on-and-off work for Don to set up
the electrical work, and a third day
for Maja to get all the miniatures set
up.
On Maja’s Christmas wish list,
alongside the hospital and
accountant’s buildings, is a special
edition Wal-Mart building that she
passed up once.
“I missed a limited edition Wal-
Mart building because I thought it
was too expensive at the time,” she
said. “I had hoped it would be on
sale after Christmas, but I never
found it again.”
The collection will continue to
grow, according to Maja, as not a
year has gone by since she received
her first buildings that she hasn’t
received at least one addition for
Christmas.
She has also purchased buildings
for the collection, including a
lighthouse that was inspired by a trip
to Newfoundland.
“We saw the lighthouse at a Sears,
and they couldn’t find it in a box
anywhere in the store,” she said.
“We had just been to Newfoundland
and I wanted the lighthouse becauseit reminded me of the trip.”Maja then said that the sales clerk
informed her that it was the last one.
“At that point I was worried they
wouldn’t be able to sell it to me,” she
said. “But they found the box. Donwas down on his hands and kneesfiguring out which wires went into
the display, and the sales clerk was
pulling it out of there, it was quite an
adventure.”
MS –Holiday gatherings often
revolve around food. Big dinners
with the family might get all the
attention, but even office parties or
casual get-togethers can focus on
food. Unfortunately, many of these
treats are loaded with fat, sugar and
calories. Try these tips to still
indulge in the holiday spirit without
packing on extra pounds.
Instead of a cracker with cheese,
try a plain reduced-fat cracker.
Instead of egg nog, try white wine.
Instead of cocktail meatballs, try
boiled shrimp.
Instead of fruitcake, try dried
apricots.
Instead of a slice of ham, try a
slice of turkey without the skin.
Instead of pumpkin or apple pie,
try a slice of angel food cake.
Instead of a cup of clam chowder
or cream of mushroom soup, try a
cup of vegetable or tomato soup.
Instead of a side of stuffing, try a
scoop of white or brown rice or
mashed potatoes.
Instead of a piece of fried chicken,
try a piece of fish or baked chicken.
Healthy holiday substitutions
Christmas tradition brings small city to life
It takes a village
The Christmas village, shown here, takes Maja and Don Dodds approximately three days to
assemble. Made of 43 buildings and countless other figurines and lights, the scene spans the
entirety of their dining room, covering tables, bookshelves and china cabinets. (Denny Scott photo)
