Rebels clinch win over Blyth/Brussels Atom girls
Blyth/Brussels Atom Girls hosted
the TCDMHA Rebels on Sunday
Dec. 19 in Brussels but were unable
to take the home-ice win, losing 2-1.
The team was anticipating an
evenly-matched game as both teams
were sitting with a 5-2 record.
The game proved to be a back-
and-forth battle with pressure on
both netminders.
The first goal was scored by the
visiting squad, which was pushed
past the line in a rebound shot, while
goalie Julia Beaven was trying to
trap the puck.
In the second period, centre Sarah
Mitchell carried the puck to net the
first and only goal for the team. The
girls continued a strong attack
against the visiting team throughout
the third period. Just as it seemed
the game would be ending in a tie, a
face-off in their end would be the
end for the game.
With just four seconds remaining
on the clock, a rebound shot loose in
front of the net was tapped in and
crossed the goal line to give the
TCDMHA Rebels the win.
The coaching staff was pleased by
all the girls’ efforts and look forward
to the Holiday Tournament in
Milverton on December 27-28.
The girls travelled to Markdale on
Saturday, Dec. 11 to play against the
undefeated Shooting Stars.
Beaven was a key component in
keeping the team in the game.
Beaven was faced with many shoots
on net, and continued a stellar
performance in goal. Beaven was
awarded with a shutout to her credit,
but the team was unable to net a goal
against the home team.
The final score was a 0-0 tie with
Markdale.

Big game
The Kincardine Bantam Local League hockey team travelled to Blyth on Sunday night for a
contest with the hometown Bulldogs. The Bulldogs got out to an early start with a 3-0 lead in
the second period and never looked back. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Old man winter showed his
strength again this past week at the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
The Monday night men, Tuesday
ladies and Tuesday competitive
leagues were forced to be cancelled
due to blowing snow.
In Monday daytime curling action
90-year-old Clayton Ruppel, in as
skip, had a hot hand as he helped
curl his team to victory. Other
teams picking up wins were
Mac Inglis, Bill Tolton, John
Mann, Irving Elliott and Hugh
Clugston.
The Wednesday night mixed
league saw all three games end in
tie scores forcing skips to draw to
the button to determine the winners.
Jennifer Elston, Robert Grein and
Dean Newson, whose draw was
right on the lid, came out on top in
three great games.
The Thursday daytime winning
skips were Ron McMichael, John
Mann, Irving Elliott, Bob Johnston,
Stewart Leedham and Barry
Simpson. The Thursday family
league had Mike Cottrill, Amy
Miller and Kabrina Bishop skip
their teams to wins. The Thursday
Belgrave and Friday mixed results
were not available for reporting.
Most of the leagues first draws
come to an end this week before the
club closes down over the holiday
between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2. All of
the leagues have a lot of laughs and
anyone interested to join a team for
some good fun should call the pro
shop for the list of league
convenors.
OUT OF THE HACK NEWS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club would like to congratulate
Scott McGregor’s team for
advancing to represent the club in
Teeswater Jan. 8 and 9 at the zone
tankard. Team member Shawn
Cottrill is looking forward to some
excellent curling and local fan
support.
