The Bulls, however, came up short in this contest, losing by a score of 7-2. Curling leagues are up and running at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. The first busy month of the season has gone by quickly and with holidays and other commitments I am a few weeks behind in my reporting. The month of December got off to a good start with the club hosting the senior men’s and women’s Dominion Ontario Zone Championship Bonspiel. Former Canadian and world champion Marilyn Biddough of St. Catharines curled her team to the A championship with Ruth Alexander’s team out of London also advancing to the Ontario playdowns. The men’s side saw Robert Stafford’s team out of Chatham win the A side and Hugh Widdup claimed the B side. On Monday, Dec. 6, winners of the daytime curlers were team Glenn McMichael, Bill Tolton, John Mann, Irving Elliott, Bob Johnston and Barry Simpson. The Monday night men’s league saw Bill McDonald and John Mann curl their teams to wins. The snow won the battle on Tuesday night with curling being cancelled. The Wednesday mixed league winners were Karen Burke, Wayne Horton and Robert Grein. The Thursday daytime curlers picking up victories were Wendell Stamper, Les Shawn, Bill Tolton, Bob Johnston, Stewart Leedham and Barry Simpson. Thursday night family league had the Amy Miller, Kabrina Bishop, Mike Cottrill and Matt Cottrill teams come out on top and the Belgrave group winners were Murray Shiell, Fred Meier, Tim Coultes and Larry Johnston. The Friday night curlers closed the week with Lynn Hickey and Wayne Horton skipping their teams to wins. On Saturday, Dec. 11 the Wingham Golf and Curling Club was pleased to hold the wedding reception meal for Leah Brak and Norm Bradley. The bride and groom and family and friends enjoyed the afternoon in the dining lounge. The Lightning opened the scoring in the first period on a nice three- way passing play with Brittany Butcher and Laken Smith setting up Laura Irwin for the goal. Brantford responded with two second-period goals to take the lead at the break. Although Saugeen had outshot Brantford 29-10, they found themselves down 2-1 with a minute to go in the game. With the goalie pulled, Saugeen’s Gina Murray fired a shot from the point with Butcher standing in the slot who managed to deflect the tying goal and resulting in a 2-2 tie.
