Morris-Turnberry councillors gave permission, at their inaugural meeting Dec. 7, for staff to prepare a report on installing water meters in Belgrave. Nancy Michie, administrator clerk-treasurer, told council a grant is available that would pay for two- thirds of the cost of the meters, which was estimated at $300-$500 per meter. “We’ve had calls from people who think they pay too much because they don’t use a lot of water,” Mchie said. Councillors generally were skeptical about the idea. “Will (homeowners) see another charge as a slap in the face?” wondered Deputy-Mayor Jason Breckenridge about covering the additional cost. Michie said there is $42,000 in a capital reserve that might be used to buy the meters if that was found feasible. “That might be a better way,” said Councillor Jamie McCallum. “A lot of people were up in arms during the election campaign.” Councillor Neil Warwick suggested the costs would rise much higher by the time the meters were installed, with things such as plumbing inspection fees. Michie said the only cost at this point in preparing a report is staff time. North Huron wants to co- operate on behalf of water users on its side of the village and she would meet with their representative and a supplier. “I see it as something else that’s likely going to be pushed on us in the future,” said Mayor Paul Gowing.
