The arrival of winter caused the

and fun. The fun happens if
you want to participate in the

toss it in the pile of gifts. If you bring
a gift, you will go home with a
gift.
Comrades in hospital include
Leona McDonald and Howard
Hackwell, both in Seaforth Hospital.
Food bank donations are doing
well and we thank all for
remembering others.
The Branch hosted the zone single
dart competition on Saturday
afternoon with about 24 players
hoping to be the best of the day. The
Branch had three darters
participating including Eric Ross,
Ron Schmidt and Dan
Beyersbergen. Advancing to district
play are Eric and Ron.
Comrades wishing to play zone
euchre are reminded to sign up. The
sheet is on the bulletin board at the
Branch.
While the dart competition was
going on upstairs, the bi-weekly
euchre was going on downstairs.
There were eight-and-a-half tables
of players. Winners were: first, John
Poland and Harry lear, 72; tied
second, John and Iola Subject and
Stewart Rowley and Bea Noble, 71;

their family Christmas gathering at
the Branch on Sunday. There
were almost 30 family members
in attendance to enjoy a turkey
dinner and a time of visiting and
laughs.
The Sunday night dance was
cancelled due to the bad weather.
The dances and euchres are now
over for 2010. Regular activities
will resume the weekend of Jan. 8
and 9.
The Christmas meat draws, wings
and fries will be held this weekend,

afternoon. The fun begins at 4:30
p.m. and everyone is invited to join
in.

“Oh, the weather outside is…” –
you know the words you want to
insert and those words probably
depend on where you live and what
you hoped to do several days of last
week.
Winter in Huron and beyond
reminds us yearly that we live in a
world not controlled by us. That’s a
good thing. In the hustle bustle time
we live in, it’s good to be set down
and made to stay put, even if it takes
snow to do it.
It gives me a smile when cities or
places not used to drops of snow
lament. For us, it’s a fact that a few
snow days are part of our routine and
if we’re smart we have provisions
and are prepared for some quiet
time. Don’t you enjoy hearing the
reports from places that aren’t used
to a large drop of snow, we just sit
back and smile.
This is the week for the Christmas
concerts, the lines are learned, the
songs are ready, the costumes tried
and fit, now just another practice or
two and the smiles begin. The wee
ones on stage peeking out to catch a
familiar face for a wave and a smile
and the parents and teachers also
smile as they realize it’s over for
another year. Holiday time is
nigh.
For the wee ones, the countdown
of the days is serious now. An
Advent calendar, an X on a regular
calendar or a number on the
chalkboard are tended to daily as the
date inches closer and closer and the
level of excitement and anticipation
increases. Oh the joys of childhood.
Many happy faces left the United
Church on Saturday with goodies in
their hands. A festive time was
observed as the Christmas baking
got done the easy way, all wrapped
and ready to go. Smiles were all
around as the Stewards of the
Church made a profit and the
customers admired the excellent
choices from the many good bakers
in the congregation. We’re thinking
Jean Davidson should start a baking
class in the new year.
Chuckles abounded at Cinnamon
Jim’s this week as the Culture Club
presented him with the “Leg Up
Award”. This is a dubious award, of
unknown origin and merit, but he
has it and accepted it graciously.
At the same auspicious occasion,
Jim Armstrong was noted to be
lacking in a few areas of life and the
Culture Club offered him gifts most
rare to make his daily routine better.
Laughter is a big part of
healthy living and sometimes it
takes a little effort to make it a good
one.
The community choral event is
rescheduled for Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
at Melville Presbyterian Church.
Hope you can make this one and the
snow is on hold for the evening.
Enjoy the preparations for this
blessed time of year.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
