Procedure surrounding remuner-ation for Huron County Councillorswas questioned by currentcouncillors, saying it mightdiscourage younger members of the public from getting involvedwith politics. While the recommendation beforecouncil at the Nov. 10 meeting of the Committee of the Whole was toestablish remuneration rates for theupcoming term of council, HuronEast Mayor Joe Seili questioned the per diem and honorarium levels. He said that because of family commitments or full-time employment, some council members have sometimes not attended the 75 per cent of the meetings that are required to ensure the $4,000 honorarium is paid to the councillor. Seili recalled a year when he missed the 75 per cent mark by one per cent due to a service call through his business at Huron Feeding Systems in Brussels and lost out on the entire honorarium. Seili said that honorarium should be paid out on a percentage basis. Ifa councillor attends 70 per cent ofthe meetings, they should be paid 70per cent of their honorarium. He said that it was unfair to lose out on his entire honorarium because of that service call and that a similar situation would discourage young councillors from getting involved due to their employment commitments. Councillor John Grace agreed, saying “it discourages young people from getting involved with upper- tier municipal politics. The remuneration recommenda- tion was tabled until the new council comes in in December, so they can vote on it themselves.
