Fish Hut celebrates second year
Erica’s Fish Hut, a fish store
owned by Dean Crawford and his
daughter Erica recently celebrated
its second year in business in
Brussels.
The father-daughter business was
opened on Ainsley Street two years
ago after a Father’s Day gift of an
aquarium from Erica inspired Dean
to start encouraging people to enjoy
one of his favourite pastimes.
“My daughter bought me [a large
aquarium tank] for Father’s Day in
2008,” Dean said. “I had always had
[tropical freshwater] fish, but this
gave me a chance to get other people
involved.”
Dean had been involved in two
different workplace accidents which
caused him to be unable to work, so
raising, caring for and selling the
fish was a good fit.
“I had major surgery due to a fall
at work,” he said. “I was never
supposed to walk again and was told
I wouldn’t be able to work, but I
went back to work.”
Later on, Dean fell again, and this
time couldn’t return to work.
Raised in the Kitchener-Waterloo
area, Dean became interested in
tropical fish when introduced to
them by Bob and Dorothy Daniels,
friends from Waterloo. Their
practice is what he hopes to emulate.
“[The Daniels] taught me how to
raise and care for my fish, and that is
what I want to do,” he said. “I
don’t want to just sell a fish and a
tank, I want to teach. That is our
practice.
“Anyone can go to a big pet store
and buy a fish and gear, but smaller
shops can teach, and teaching is
better than having a customer come
back every week,” he said.
Some of the fish that Dean
currently has in stock are Black
Acei, Black Convicts and Jade Eye
Chichlids, but he says he can have
any fish delivered.
“I have contacts all over,” he said.
“And they’re local. I don’t buy fish
from Florida, I get them from [local
breeders in places like] Hamilton,
Guelph and Sarnia.”
The store also trades and sells used
equipment and fish, provided they
are freshwater.
“I do freshwater fish, I always
have since I was 16,” he said. “I have
no knowledge of saltwater fish, I
don’t keep them.”
Dean also makes his own feed for
the fish, stating that he can take deer
hearts from hunters and turn it into
his own brand of fish food.
For more information about
owning or raising fish, call Erica’s
Fish Hut at 519-887-8928.
