Welcome to the month of
December. We had two great days to
start the week and then the snow
started. The last two days of the
week had challenges to say the least.
I heard on the radio that the police
had investigated 81 vehicle mishaps
by Friday morning alone.
Considering the first snow happens
every year, why are drivers such
slow learners. Slow down and arrive
safely, the slippery snow is here and
everyone needs to adjust.
The slippery snow can be blamed
for the unfortunate fall of John
Cousins. He fell in his driveway and
has suffered a broken femur (upper
leg bone). John was taken to
Seaforth Hospital and then
transferred to Stratford. John will
have surgery for the break and we
hope he recovers fully.
Area folks still in hospital include
Leona McDonald and Marie
McTaggart in Seaforth Hospital. We
hope both are feeling comfortable in
their surroundings. We understand
that Bob Alexander is coming along
very well and we hope to see him out
and about real soon.
Murray Lowe is working just in
the mornings and seems to be
coming along very well. Just don’t
work him too hard – so the sign says.
We understand that Mel
McCutcheon is home from hospital
and we hope he continues to
improve.
A couple of former Walton girls
hit the big town of Maryhill to
celebrate a birthday. Linda
Gingerich has reached the milestone
of more than 50 and less than 70 –
about halfway I would say. Linda
and good friend Pauline Gulutzen
headed to the Maryhill Hotel to
enjoy a fantastic night of quality
entertainment. Headlining the snowwas Elvis impersonator, RoyLeblanc, who was fantastic as usual. He also does a set of Johnny Cash
tunes. Two other entertainer/
impersonators performed Roy
Orbison and Buddy Holly. The girls
met up with a group of their friends
from the Cambridge/Waterloo area
and had a great time. They spent
some time shopping the next day and
then it was home again. Happy
birthday Linda.
Lots of families gather early to
celebrate Christmas including the
Wilbee family. The family of Ian
Wilbee gathered at the home of
grandson Scott and wife Erin
Henderson in Seaforth this past
weekend. Enjoying the family time
together were Ian, Brian, Keith,
Gloria, Kevin, Mark Wilbee and
Murray, Carol, Scott, Erin, Steve
Henderson and Jacklin Hulley.
Rae McClure is home for the pre-
Christmas season. He is busy
visiting and staying with various
members of the McClure family. Rae
is the host for the annual McClure
Christmas this year and has been
busy getting the organizing done.
The final deer hunt with guns for
2010 is over and the numbers are not
as high as the November hunt. The
groups that I know of managed to
get some, but the weather wasn’t the
best at the end of last week. The
Shortreed brunch had four guys and
managed four deer. The Fritz gang
shot 12 for their efforts. The deer can
now rest a little easier, although bow
hunting can still be done until the
end of the year.
Several groups are also hosting
Christmas parties including the
Municipality of Morris-Turnberry
council, office staff and works
employees gathered at the Wingham
Golf and Country Club for a lovely
social evening and meal. All were
welcomed by the great music of “No
Expectations” prior to sitting down
to the wonderful meal provided.
Entertainment was also provided by
three women who perform to raise
money for the needy children of the
world. The “Con Concubines”
performed comedy sketches for
everyone’s enjoyment. There were
three special presentations made toemployees for their years of serviceto the township. Receiving their five-year service pins were Kelly Tiffin
and Ross Goll. Linda Walker
received her 15-year service pin.
Mayor-elect Paul Gowing conveyed
words of appreciation and presented
gifts to the departing members of
council. A video of memories of the
many council activities from the last
12 years was presented by Kim
Johnston, as well as a comical video
of the group. Words of
encouragement, memories shared
and goodbyes were heard from
Dorothy Kelly, Edna McLellan and
Jim Nelemans. Nancy Michie
wished them all well in their futures.
Door prizes were drawn and then the
band played again. It was a lovely
evening.
Home for a pre-Christmas visit is
Sherry Delay and her dog Dawson.
She is home to visit with mom and
dad, Barry and Karen Hoegy. Sherry
made the drive from Morristown,
Tennessee and will be here for about
six days. Sherry attended church at
Walton on Sunday to see some of the
Walton people.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Jim Fritz, Scott Godkin,
Justin Hoegy, Curtis Wharton, Paul
McCallum, Mary Bernard, Greg
Bowers, Ron Godkin, Devin
Bachert, Rick McDonald, Mark
Nolan, Mike Nolan, Liz Roth,
Lorraine Blake, Glenda Morrison,
John Glauser and Mackenzie
Gulutzen. Happy birthday to all.
On the second Sunday of Advent,
the congregational members were
greeted by Murray and Olene
Dennis. The Advent liturgy and
lighting of the Advent candles was
done by Jo-Ann McDonald and
Karen Hoegy. Rev. Peter called
Marie McGavin to give the
Presbytery report. Marie attended
the meeting at St. John’s United
Church in Stratford and the theme
was Missions. The attendees were
asked to share what they do for
fundraising activities for Missions.
Marie showed a poster made by
Bluevale Church about Sierra Leone,
Rev. Peter’s homeland. In other
business of Presbytery, the rate permember is now $32.70, which is anincrease. The budget us up and themembership of the United Church is
down. In 2005, there were 11,050
members and in 2010, 9,826.
It was White Gift Sunday and
Emma Baan and Craig Baan
gathered the many articles given by
the members of the congregation.
This was an example of “missions”.
Rev. Peter thanked everyone for their
generous gifts. Bonnie Glanville
read the scripture readings and the
choir sang the anthem, “Gentle
Mary”. The offering was taken by
Murray Dennis and Lorne Glanville.
Announcements included the
Community Carol Night at Melville
Presbyterian Church on Dec. 12 at
7:30 p.m. Breakfast will be held at
Duff’s on Dec. 12 following church.
Cookies for the shut-ins need to be
brought to the church by the Dec. 12
also. Annual reports are to be e-
mailed to Monique before the end of
the year.
The snow was falling gently as the
56 ladies of Walton UCW and many
friends arrived at Duff’s United
Church for the annual Christmas
celebration. Marie McGavin
welcomed everyone to the evening
and introduced Rev. Peter at Duff’s
United. The group sang, “We Wish
You A Merry Christmas” to get
everyone in the spirit and Rev. Peter
said the blessing. The group then
enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner
served up by the Seaforth Bakery
and chef Christine Behnke and
helpers. Following the dinner,
Dianne McCallum and Donna
McClure did a short narrative of its
23 days before Christmas. The group
then sang the song, “Hope is a Star”.
The sisters then read the Story of
Christmas and the journey of Joseph
and Mary and the birth of the baby
Jesus. Marie McGavin accompanied
the group on the piano as they sung,
“Go Tell It On The Mountain”.
Marie then introduced Anna
Hamilton, owner of Anna’s Dress
Shop in Seaforth. Anna has operated
a dress store for 34 years, opening
her first store in Brussels and the
moving to her location in Seaforth.
Anna presented about a dozen lovely
fashions modelled by Colleen
Elliott, Maxine Houston, Joy Ross
and Liz Bracken. There was a lovely
array of slacks and sweater sets,
winter jackets, coats, scarves, short
dresses, long dresses and dressy
tops. MacKenzie McGavin modelled
a lovely graduation dress for the
younger clientele. Marie thanked
Anna and her models for graciously
providing the beautiful fashions for
all of us.
The second part of the evening’s
entertainment was a singing group
from the Bayfield/Goderich area.
The 15 ladies call themselves, The
Glee Sisters and they are a group of
women who just love to sing. They
were brought to the group by the
generosity of Marie McGavin, who
purchased their services at a silent
auction. They sang some old
favourites like, “Sing, Sing a Song”,
“O Beautiful Guya” and a couple of
Christmas songs. Marie thanked
everyone for attending the Christmas
celebration. She then presented a
monetary gift to Rev. Peter towards
his trip to Sierra Leone next year.
Everyone sang, “We Wish You A
Merry Christmas” again to end the
evening.
