Ironmen win two, lose to Walkerton on weekend
The Wingham Ironmen took four
of a possible six points on the
weekend in Western Junior C
Hockey League action.
After trailing 2-0 after the first
period on Friday evening in
Mitchell, the Ironmen came back
and scored a 7-4 decision over the
Hawks. Playing at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Saturday evening, the Ironmen
skated to a 6-1 decision over the
Kincardine Bulldogs. The third
game of the weekend was Sunday
afternoon in Walkerton and the
Hawks embarrassed the Ironmen 10-
2.
Prior to the game on Saturday,
league convenor Steve Coulter of
Brussels presented the OHA Junior
C player of the month for November
award to Ironmen captain Chris
Corbett of Brussels. In seven games
last month, Corbett had 11 goals and
five assists for 16 points. He also
played in this year’s All-star game.
Following Saturday’s win over the
Bulldogs, coach Chad Haggitt said
these were two big wins for the
Ironmen.
“These were important wins for
us, because these are the teams who
are chasing us,” he said.
However, he noted that Kincardine
and Mitchell are struggling at the
present time.
A controversial second Ironmen
goal by Jackson Martin appeared to
take Kincardine Bulldogs’ netminder
Brian Hainsworth off his game.
Kincardine protested that Jackson
kicked the puck into the net, but
referee Dennis Watson allowed the
goal to stand.
“We’ve played great the last three
games,” Haggitt said following the
win over the Bulldogs. “We’ve
always talked about playing 60
minutes, and the last three games we
have been playing a full game.”
The Ironmen could have been tired
on Sunday afternoon when they
played the Walkerton Hawks in
Walkerton, but coach Haggitt
believes the results were better than
previous games.
“We’ve talked about the game, and
the players have a better attitude
toward the game,” he said.
Recently acquired Evan Ducharme
of Brussels said the team played
well.
“We didn’t start the game all that
great, but as the game progressed we
started playing better,” he said. “The
puck started going in for us.”
A native of Brussels, Ducharme
started the season playing for the
Seaforth Juveniles.
He said this was a lot better brand
of hockey and the pace is a lot faster.
Still adjusting to the style of play,
Ducharme has three points, two
goals and an assist, for the Ironmen,
in five games.
He scored one of the six goals
against the Bulldogs.
The Ironmen also acquired Blair
Goss from the Fergus Devils prior to
the weekend. He paced the attack on
Saturday as he scored two goals and
added an assist. Blair McConnell
tallied his first goal of the season and
chipped in with an assist. Wade
Stephenson, Martin and Ducharme
also scored for the Ironmen.
Chris Corbett sparked the attack
against Mitchell on Friday as he
scored once and collected a pair of
assists. Brett Brophy, Cory
MacDonald and Stephenson each
had a goal and an assist. Single goals
were added by Aaron Armstrong
and Goss. David Jones picked up
two assists.
Due to the Atom Regional Silver
Stick tournament, the Ironmen are
on the road for a single game this
weekend. The Ironmen travel to
Hanover on Friday for an 8:30 p.m.
contest against the Barons.

The Saugeen Maitland AA
Lightning travelled to Whitby to take
part in the 10-team “Tournament of
Heroes” last weekend.
Saugeen started against the Sarnia
Lady Sting and came up short with a
2-1 loss. They bounced back with a
convincing 4-1 win against
Gloucester Cumberland.
The third round-robin game pitted
the Lightning against the host
Whitby Wolves. With Saugeen
leading 1-0 late in the third period,
the Wolves got the equalizer to limit
the Lightning to a single point.
In the final playdown game, the
Lightning had to storm back with
two third-period goals to equal
Markham Stouffville Stars and earn
a 2-2 tie. With four points in round-
robin play, Saugeen were able to
finish their pool in second place and
would face their league rival
Bluewater Hawks in a semi-final
pairing.
As in past games, the
Bluewater/Saugeen match saw a
good defensive battle with the
Lightning scoring the only goal of
the game and advanced to the gold
medal game with a 1-0 win. Picking
up the shutout was Chesley’s
Micaela Stutzki. The championship
game saw a rematch between
Whitby and Saugeen, unfortunately
for the Lightning, the Wolves
brought their best game of the
weekend and sailed to a convincing
5-0 gold medal victory.
Leading the Lightning on the
score sheet was Brittany Butcher
with a goal and three assists. Also
picking up weekend goals were
Laken Smith (two), Laura Irwin
(two), Sara Gossell, Brooklyn Irwin,
Hannah Davidson and Marcie
Landman, while assists went to
Abby Gibson, Nicole Marriage,
Dollee Meigs, Gina Murray, Gossell
and Davidson.
Having a good weekend in net was
Stutzki who finished the tournament
with a 1.83 G.A.A.
