From the Minister’s StudyKipfer shares media sites for ChristiansBy Brent KipferBrussels Mennonite Fellowship
When I was a boy, the world of
media was not terribly hard to
navigate. Our TV antennae pulled in
four stations – with the same shows
that everyone else in the
neighbourhood could watch.
Whatever your viewing preferences,
you did not need to be a television
junkie to know the landscape of
options. Gilligan’s Island (reruns, of
course!), The Dukes of Hazzard,
Magnum, P.I., The Cosby Show and
Hockey Night in Canada were part of
a mostly-shared TV culture.
When I turned on the radio, I could
find hard and soft rock, country, pop
and classical stations, but I mostly
wanted to listen to Tom Cheek and
Jerry Howarth announce play-by-
play for the Blue Jays. My parents
did not need to be pop culture
whizzes to understand my media
world.
Today I need all the help I can get
to figure out the ever-changing
media territory of my children’s
generation. My kids help me out
tremendously – mainly by seeking
out good stuff on the internet and
letting me know about it. Sometimes
they simply read me a review of the
latest Mario Brothers DSi game
from www.nintendolife.com and
give me the run-down on its pros and
cons. Other times, they have
uncovered real online treasure. I
know that there is no shortage of
stuff to see out there, but in the spirit
of sharing, I would like to pass on a
few links.
The first is Focus on the Family’s
Plugged In Online website
(www.pluggedin.com). Topnotch
writers provide highly engagingreviews of the latest movies, TV,
music, video and games (with
reviews of older material available,
too).
As with any good review, you get
the writer’s take on the entertainment
value of the product. These
reviewers go deeper, however.
Through the lens of a Christian
worldview, they let you know about
positive values embedded in the
characters and plot of a movie. For
example, do characters keep
promises? Does the plot involve a
noble quest? They also explore
spiritual themes, how sexuality is
portrayed, the use of violence and
language. Without being preachy,
they give you tools for making an
informed choice about what your
family watches (or listens to or
plays). The site also includes
podcasts and culture clips that
analyze pop culture as a whole.
A couple of other websites simply
provide great entertainment that our
children love (their parents, too).
www.jellytelly.com is produced by
Phil Vischer, the creator of
Veggietales. Every Monday, our kids
eagerly tune in for a fresh weekly fix
of new material, watching a quirkymix of characters use witty banter,
humour and music to entertain and
educate them about weird random
facts and the Bible.
For $4.99 U.S./month, you can
subscribe to the site and access new
content every day. Without a
subscription, you still get a freshly
weekly dose. You definitely need a
high-speed internet connection for
this one.
The internet portal for the
Adventures in Odyssey children’s
radio drama is www.whitsend.org
Created for ages eight to 12, but
enjoyed by the whole family,
Adventures in Odyssey presents
original audio stories brought to life
by actors who make you feel like
part of the experience. These
fictional, character-building dramas
are created by an award-winning
team that uses storytelling to teach
lasting truths. The site includes free
downloads, behind-the-scenes
podcasts and even material for
family devotional (prayer) times.
A fourth website –
www.thrivingfamily.ca – is geared
toward parents, providing great
insights into family life, including
material on strengthening marriages, single parenting and blended
parenting. How do you encourage
gratitude in your children? How do
you make space for God in your
family? If you are looking for fresh
wisdom for your family, this is a
good site to visit.
Finally, in case you have not
already seen the Welland, Ontario
YouTube video that has gone viral in
the last couple of weeks, check out
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXh7JR9oKVE (or type
“Christmas Food Court Flash Mob
Welland” into your search engine –
ie. Google, Yahoo, etc).
A group of unsuspecting shoppers
received an unexpected gift
as they ate lunch in a mall food
court.
May the hallelujahs of Christmas
also bring fresh joy to you and your
family this season.
