Santa Claus Parade thought to be a great success
What
a great Santa Claus Parade on
Saturday in Brussels. Everyone I
spoke to reported that they thought it
was great. Congratulations to all the
folks who took the time to organize
such wonderful floats and other
entries. Christmas music, Christmas
lights, and the arrival of Santa must
mean Christmas is just around the
corner. Just 25 days away!
It is the second week of deer
hunting for the year. I did see more
orange coats first thing Monday
morning than I did for the hunt in
November, so the deer population
will be thinned down even more.
There have been more deer
collisions but not involving my
family. Neighbour Lorraine Blake
was returning to her home in
London when she had the
misfortune of hitting a deer. She was
fortunate not to be seriously hurt but
her car was demolished.
Catching up with those in hospital
include Marg Exel, who is still a
patient in Listowel Hospital. Jean
Evans is also in Listowel. Patients in
Seaforth Hospital include Marie
McTaggart and Leona McDonald.
Mel McCutcheon is a patient in
Stratford Hospital following
surgery. Ria Vandenbroek is moving
to Parkwood Hospital in London to
continue her rehab. Folks dealing
with some health issues include
Howard Hackwell, Harold
McCallum, George Blake, Dena
(Wey) Kale and Marie Coutts.
Doreen Hackwell is waiting to have
more surgery on her knee. We wish
everyone improved health in the
weeks ahead.
Good news for Murray Lowe. He
has come along nicely from his
surgery and missed working somuch, the doctor has allowed him togo back to work for short periods.Watch for the sign to be open anddrop in to see the smiling face ofMuzzy.
I have been enjoying my two
weeks of working holidays from
hairdressing. I have been delivering
mail for the vacationing Judy
Emmrich around the Walton area. It
is a nice change to just drive and
listen to the radio, think, make plans,
sing and talk to myself sometimes.
No phones ringing, no questions to
answer or making conversation. It is
an enjoyable change. Mind you,
when I would get home at night, it
was non-stop catching up. We have a
great visit with Alex Townsend and
John Uyl, the other two mail carriers
while sorting the mail. All three of
us drive bus as well, so we enjoy
“sharing” our experiences as drivers.
Never a dull moment and we have a
lot of laughs.
While out and about, I noticed the
many changes throughout the
countryside. Many farmers have
been busy cleaning up machinery
and have most things looking pretty
tidy around the farm. Some barns
have some new boards put on and
fence bottoms are being cleaned up
on several farms. The townships
have been busy cutting down some
of the huge old trees that line the
concessions. There have been many
added additions to properties
including beautiful landscaped
flowerbeds, new garages, wrap-
around porches and patios. There
was a new small shed, a large shed
being built, a barn addition being
built, a new chicken barn going up
and two new homes on the road to
completion. There are 11 solar
panels that have been erected that I
saw. The tile drainage crews are still
putting in field tile and the
snowmobile trail crews have some
of the trail areas staked. Lots of
changes everywhere around the area
in a year.
Judy and Clint Emmrich have
been to Florida for the past two
weeks. They have a time share and
spend one week on each of the
coasts. They spend time relaxing, fishing, going to flea markets andsome shopping. The weather hasbeen in the 30-degree range andquite nice. They report that BlackFriday shopping is crazy and a good
day to stay away from the stores.
Welcome back.
Returning from a special vacation
are Don and Dale Chesher. The
couple treated themselves to a
Mediterranean cruise for their 45th
wedding anniversary. They have
now seen the areas of Italy, Greece,
Turkey and Croatia. They travelled
with the Princess Cruise Lines and
were very happy with their
accommodations, meals, slots,
chapel and top notch entertainment.
There were comedians, shows,
revues and five different bands, pop,
classical, rock and roll and
orchestras. The couple, who both are
very musical, report that they heardone of the finest musicians ever andwill remember it always. Dalereports that her favourite place wasthe Isle of Rhodes, Greece. Abeautiful island with rich history and
a funny story about the Colossus of
Rhodes. A very large bronze statue
built 300 years ago toppled into the
harbour about 56 years ago. It took a
junk dealer, an enterprising Arab,
and 900 camels to demolish and
carry away the statue, and make lots
of money. The couple report they
had some poor tour guides but also
some excellent ones. One guide in
particular was an educated Professor
of archeology but could make more
money being a tour guide. They saw
the Ephesus and walked the streets
of marble, the unearthed stone
epitaphs of Saint Paul, the ancient

darters. Winners were: first, Ron
Schmidt and Marlene Rutledge;
second, Deb Burch, Brian Westburg
and Sandra Josling; high shot, Kae

out and joining the fun. Winners
were: first, Harry Smith and Sandra
Josling; second, Roger McHardy
and Deb Cann; high shot, Leith
Morrison, 126; high start of the

The Friday night supper of sweet
and sour meatballs and rice was
enjoyed by a smaller crowd of
around 25. This week will be
Salisbury steak.
It was a great surprise for Don
Hastings as family and friends
surprised him with a 40th birthday
party at the Branch on Friday
evening. He was called in to check
out a “imaginary gas leak” at the
Branch and when entering, found a
large crowd on hand to congratulate
and give him birthday wishes.
Happy birthday Don!
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had eight-and-a-half tables of
players. Winners were: first, Ed
Stewart and Glen Sellers; second,
Dorothy Carter and Joanne
MacDonald; third, Bev Hayden and
Mary McIntosh; lone hands, Bill and
Faye Albert. A new face at the
euchre is Bush Whittard working
alongside Marg Bennett. Bush will
be helping out as Leona McDonald
is in hospital.
Veterans Service Officer Comrade
Mabel Glanville and Comrade Lloyd
Glanville attended the Veterans
Service Officer meetings held in
Listowel on the weekend. They
enjoyed the guest speakers and the
information provided by the
presenters of Zone, District and
Ontario Command.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of over 90 on hand to
enjoy the music of the John Heaman
Band. Missing from greeting the
dancers was Howard Hackwell who
is under the weather. Mary
Bradshaw was a fine replacement.
The early-bird program will be
over by the time most read the paper
and the dues will be the regular fee.
Over half the Legion’s members
