was given by the congregation to
support the church and to give to
missions. Everyone said a prayer of
dedication of the offering. The
hymn, “Hope is a Star” was sung
while the children went downstairs
for their time of fellowship. Braidon
Abell-Rinn carried the Christ
candle.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “26 Shopping Days Until Jesus’
Birth”. The scriptures tell us that
people went to the Temple to get
closer to God. If all people were
faithful to God there would be peace
in the world. If we love the children
we would help feed the children and
stop the wars. There is a man in
Toronto who uses the weapons that
are taken away from people and
converts them into gardening tools
to produce food. We are invited to
walk in the Light of God. If people
would learn to share, there would be
no need for violence. With the birth
of Jesus we enjoy love, peace and
joy. God asks us to lean forward and
the light will shine.
For the anthem, the choir sang the
Noel hymn. The next hymn was
“Fairest Lord Jesus” followed by the
prayers of the world and the singing
of The Lord’s Prayer, the last hymn,
“I See a New Heaven”, the
commissioning and the benediction
and the choral response, “Lord We
Pray”. Everyone was invited
downstairs for beef on a bun
prepared by the stewards.
Families have changed in big waysover the last 30 years - fathershaven’t always been supported tohave a nurturing role in their
children’s lives. Public Health Nurse
Theresa Wammes-Glavin says that’s
why dads need to know they have a
profound and lasting effect on theirchildren. The Huron County Health Unit islaunching a new campaign called
“In Huron Dads Make a Difference.”
Wammes-Glavin says fathers can
feel stressed and overwhelmed at
times and they need to know it’s
okay to take a break when they need
one.
“We know that men don’t always
get the chance to develop their
nurturing side and can getoverwhelmed with the stresses of acrying infant or child. We knowfrom research that this can lead to
one act of anger that can have
terrible effects on a child,” says
Wammes-Glavin. She says research
shows shaking an infant, even up to
the age of five, can damage their
brains and cause death or serious
injury.
The health unit has launched a
section on their website withinformation specifically for dads:www.huroncounty.ca/health, itincludes information on how to
handle difficult behaviour in young
children. Fathers are also
encouraged to call the health unit for
more information.
Wammes-Glavin says families are
all different now. “In many families,
both parents work. In some families,
only the father works. In other
families, the father stays home tolook after the children while themother goes to work. Some fathersdo not live with their children; other
fathers are single parents and some
may be stepfathers. Dads have a
significant role in raising children.”
The health unit will be distributing
posters around the county promoting
the program as well as working with
health care providers who see
fathers of young children.
