Advent begins at
United Church
The sanctuary of Londesborough
United Church has been beautifully
decorated for the Christmas season
by members of the Sunday School
and their teachers.
Minister Terry Fletcher reminded
everyone that Christians around the
world have entered the Advent
season as he lit the first candle in the
Advent wreath; the candle of hope.
Today, most people are aware of
the term, computer virus. Such
viruses cause computer programs to
behave in strange ways. Terry read
to the congregants gathered last
Sunday morning an e-mail he had
received about a Christmas virus.
Apparently this seasonal virus
causes people to behave in unusual
ways. He advised everyone to send
this virus to all their friends.
Bev Riley read the week’s
“Minute for Missions” titled
“Partnership not Charity”. One hears
many pleas at this time of year for
gifts of livestock, water, etc. for
Third World Countries. The article
suggested these gifts of charity may
not necessarily be right for the
recipients. The Mission and Service
Fund of the United Church of
Canada partners with church groups
in needy countries to make their
dollars be of the most benefit.
Mr. Fletcher and the boys and girls
gathered at the front discussed how
dark a home can be at night before
someone turns on that first light and
makes everything feel warm and
welcoming. And they spoke about
how outdoor Christmas lights make
travellers feel warm and happy.
Through the ages people have put
candles, lanterns and lamps in their
windows as a sign of welcome to
weary travellers. It is a custom that
arose from the desire to guide
Joseph and Mary, weary travellers,
on their road to Bethlehem.
The first Sunday of Advent is
commonly referred to as the Sunday
of the Prophets. It is the first Sunday
in the journey to Advent. The
scripture reading was Isaiah 2: 1-5.
In these verses God is promising the
coming of Jesus. The prophets were
used by God to prepare the world for
the coming, to sow seeds of hope
and joy. Christians today have
choices, to let the world know about
the joy of the coming of
Christ(mas), to spread hope not
despair.
Advent means ‘to come’. It is a
time of anticipation; it is a time to
reflect and find purpose. An Advent
wreath has four candles. Three
candles are blue, said to represent
Mary. The fourth candle is white, the
candle of Christmas. The wreath
itself is decorated with evergreen,
the symbol of life, for an evergreen
tree is green all year round. The
circle of the wreath represents
continuous life. Candle wreaths,
which have Celtic beginnings, were
introduced to Christians by Martin
Luther.
Just a reminder that this coming
Sunday Londesborough United will
hold their White Gift service with
lunch to follow. Then on Monday
evening the UCW invites women of
the community to their Christmas
potluck and program beginning at
6:30 p.m.
The Happy Gang Seniors held

I’m a trifle embarrassed to report
that I didn’t realize our own
neighbour recently spent a week in
hospital. Frank Johnston is now
home and recovering nicely. I expect
he would still welcome some
company or a call.
Kathy Greidanus, daughter of
Louis and Nancy, was using the
former general store in the village to
offer her Christmas Creations for
sale. Kathy worked at GreyhavenGardens during the summer andpicked up a few tricks that she used to create winter outdoorarrangements, grapevine trees, etc.If you missed stopping by the store, she will have some creationsat the Auburn Craft Show on Dec. 4.
