THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2010.By Jo-Ann McDonaldChristmas has started around theBrussels Legion Branch with thefirst family Christmas catering. TheKnight families gathered at the Branch on Saturday after the Santa Claus parade. The Knight family had a great float, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas from “Happy Holi—Knights”. The near-50 family members enjoyed a social time and visiting, before sitting down to the traditional turkey dinner served by the Branch. Comrades of the Branch giving of their time and talents included Deb Cann, Judy Lee, Sharon Robbins, Mabel Glanville and Jo-Ann McDonald working and Cora Alcock, Sarah Overholt and MargBennett providing desserts for thegroup.Branch Comrades Jim Brown andSandra Josling decorated the Branch for the Christmas season both inside and out and our thanks goes to them.Comrades under the weatherinclude Leona McDonald inSeaforth Hospital and Padre SandraCable having spent a few days in hospital but now released. Comrade Howard Hackwell is undergoingsome health issues at this time and isunder the weather. We wish them the December has arrived. The reality that we have nearly spent another year is mind boggling. The end of a year is just like income tax time. You know the facts but it’s hard to get your mind to agree. The questions abound and the answers are hard coming. So onward we go into the last month and for some, the very best one of all. Advent is here, the time for preparing, the time to figure our place in the world and how we can be a benefit to those in our midst. My concern with December is that we make such a big deal of helping others, when it really is a year-long thing. So as you’re being charitable this month, make a pact with yourself to do the same thing several times in the coming year. School and church concerts are scheduled and by now you know where you need to be and when. As you are thinking about the event, do memories of your own past concerts come to mind? I went to SS#10 in Morris with other families with names like McKercher, Nicholson, Adams, Shaw, Breckenridge, Peacock, Johnston and Gowing and of course Hetherington. Practices were usually unruly and hectic and thankfully once a year. Boards and large sheets were brought in the day before, so a proper practice could be held on stage. Everyone had a part and everyone, well nearly everyone, took it seriously. We had a lot of big boys when I was in Grade 1, so I’m sure crowd control was fun. Anyway, everyone had a good time and best of all, after Santa arrived Mr. King came every year with buckets of ice cream and everyone was treated to an ice cream cone. This was when no one had freezers and ice cream was just as special as Christmas. Call me if you have a memory to share. Santa Claus made it to Brussels on Saturday evening and it looked like he and Mabel had a good time. Everyone was happy with the parade, lots of lights, people, floats and horses. A nice long parade. The mood was good as the spectators enjoyed all the effort and enthusiasm that the many groups, businesses and individuals put into this community effort. Using the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre for a gathering place gave folks a chance to visit and wait in the warmth. There is a spot for everyone as Santa schedules visits, kids get their faces painted, everyone goes for a skate or just hangs out and enjoys snack. It’s a nice way to start the Christmas mood. So to all the participants, to the business organizers and the groups involved – thank you. You know who you are and we want you to know all your time and effort on our behalf is appreciated. The winners are: most original float, Morris-Turnberry; best service club float, Brussels Lions; best commercial float, Townsend Tire; best overall float, D&D Glass; turkey draw winners, Candice Schiel and Elaine Snell; best coloured picture winners, ages 1-4, Carly of Listowel, Avery Mueller; ages 5-8, Jayden Fraser and Joel Nesbitt; ages 9-12, Tyler VanderMeer and Caitlin Scarrow. Christmas begins at the Brussels Legion The main attraction Santa travelled through Brussels on Saturday night with his lovely wife Mrs. Claus as part of the annual Brussels Santa Claus Parade.
