HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-11-25, Page 27The Neil Diamond tribute show “Diamond in the Rough” is coming to Blyth on Nov. 27, featuring Toronto-based Diamond tribute act Joey Purpura. In addition to performing Diamond’s vocal tones and phrasing, Pupura’s occasional anecdotes describing the background behind Neil’s compositions add to the impact of the performance and his show impresses even the most devoted Neil Diamond fans. Purpura’s Neil Diamond tribute, “Diamond in the Rough”, serves up Diamond’s music with such hits as Cracklin’ Rosie, Sweet Caroline, America, Love on the Rocks, I’m a Believer and many more Neil Diamond classics. Tickets to the show only are $20 each. The rafters of Knox Presbyterian Church in Goderich will be ringing on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2:30 p.m. when the Blyth Festival Singers host “Noel We Sing!”. The Singers will perform selections from Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols”, as well as many other joyful songs of the season. For this performance, they will be joined by featured guests, Angus Sinclair on organ, and Al Mullin on trumpet. Angus Sinclair holds a B.Mus. in Organ Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as ARCT and LRSM diplomas in Organ Performance. He is an Associate of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. Acting as director of music in various Southwestern Ontario churches since 1978, including a term at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, Sinclair’s latest position has been Director of Music at Bishop Cronyn Memorial Anglican Church in London. Sinclair is also the arranger and accompanist of the ever-popular “Three Cantors”, acting as the “4th Cantor’ since the first concert in 1997. The Three Cantors have presented over 160 concerts coast to coast, from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. Together with the Three Cantors, Sinclair was made an honorary member of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, an Honorary Senior Fellow of Renison College at the University of Waterloo (2007) and received the Alumni Award of Distinction from Huron University College (2008). Al Mullin is no stranger to the Singers either. He has played with them in previous concerts. A local trumpet player, music educator and conductor, Mullin taught for over 25 years for the Avon Maitland District School Board at Goderich District Collegiate and Central Huron Secondary School. While an undergraduate, he obtained a degree in piano performance at University of Western Ontario. Both will be featured in solo numbers for the concert, as well as performing together with the choir. Steve Hearn, local percussionist, will also be joining in. The audience should be prepared to blend their voices in a rousing sing- along too! This fast-paced two- hour concert skillfully combines old-time fiddling with country gospel songs, perennial favourites and a generous helping of humour. Woods has performed to enthusiastic crowds throughout Canada, the U.S. and Holland. This young man has captured all major Canadian fiddling titles, including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Champion and Canadian Fiddle Entertainer of the year. For seven years he was the musical director and played the part of Don Messer in “Memories of Don Messer’s Jubilee”, a tribute show which has toured across the country. In addition, he has several recordings to his credit which will be available for sale at the concert. “Old Time Christmas” will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Blyth Memorial Hall. Proceeds from the event will also help support new play development at the Blyth Festival, but the Blyth Festival would like to invite all those in attendance to bring a non- perishable food item, new toy, article of clothing or toiletries to support the Huron County Christmas Bureau. Blyth Memorial Community Hall will once again serve as a collection point for donations to the local bureau, so even those not attending “Old Time Christmas” are encouraged to drop off a donation during the month of December. The dance was a fundraiser for the Bunumbu School Project. The Blyth Public School Grade 8 class was also there selling snacks to raise money for their graduation trip.
