HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-11-25, Page 23THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2010. PAGE 23. In October, Bicycles for Humanitycollected just over 700 good usedbicycles to send to Namibia, Africa. The initial goal was to collect 350 to
400 bikes to fill one shipping
container. Instead, twice as many
bikes were received, so now two
containers can be sent.
The bicycles are currently stored
at Spring Breezes Greenhouse near
Blyth where they are made ready for
shipping and waiting for the finances
to come together. The goal now is to
ship one container by mid-
December and one in mid-January.
The cost works out to nearly
$12,000 per container to cover all
expenses including purchasing the
container and shipping to the
destination in Namibia.
To help raise funds for shipping,
tickets are being sold for a Country
Christmas Home Tour. Five gracious
and generous homeowners are
warmly welcoming you into their
homes to let you see how they
decorate for Christmas. Much of the
decorating in these homes is done by
the homeowners themselves and
some assistance was received by
local businesses who lent plants and
decorations to the homes.
This fundraising event for
Bicycles for Humanity will be held
on Dec. 3 from 6 - 9 p.m. and on
Dec. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The stops on the tour are:
• Steven and Laurie Sparling’s
home: This gorgeous grand home inthe heart of Blyth was built from1890-1892. It features deep crownmouldings and medallions, 12' and
13' ceilings, extensive woodwork
and trim and hardwood flooring
throughout. The house has been
restored and updated through the
years always maintaining the
character and original detail. Steven
and Laurie have gone all out
decorating for Christmas and it is
just a beautiful home to see and
admire.
• Luke and Shirley Bouman’s
home: This family home on the
outskirts of Blyth was built in 1994
to accommodate a large family with
seven children. This year they added
a sunroom to bring more space and
light into the kitchen area. The sun
shines in making for a cheerful
country house.
• Andy and Darlene VanderVeen’s
home: On Harlock line, three
sideroads east of Blyth, Andy and
Darlene purchased this farm in 1998.
At that time the house was
completely gutted inside, the
existing addition was removed and a
new one built including a new
kitchen, laundry room, entrance and
garage. Darlene enjoys decorating
and gardening which will be evident
as you view this home.
• Alfred and Marianne Dykstra’s
home: Travelling down London
Road, is Alfred and Marianne’s farm
home which dates back to the mid-1800s. History reveals that thebricks on this home were kilnedfrom a pond nearby, with triple brick
on the first level and double brick on
the second level. It was purchased by
the Dykstras in 1984, and although
they have done many renovations
over the years they have tried to
maintain the integrity and character
of the house. A new addition was
included in 2003 which includes the
kitchen, finished basement, seating
area and new entrance.
• Ed and Connie DeJong’s brand
new log home just north of Clinton
on London Road: Many people
watched this house go up this past
summer and fall and remarked on
how beautiful it looks. The DeJongs
just moved in a month or so ago, and
instead of having an open house,
they have joined the home tour. It is
a 2,000 sq. foot house, wheelchair
accessible and has 1,600 board feet
of 1x6 pine throughout. The kitchen
cupboards are made of wormy
maple, and the flooring is ceramic
and bamboo. A special feature is the
log staircase that goes to the loft.
Nature’s Nest of Londesborough did
the welcoming Christmas display on
the porch.
• Blyth Christian Reformed
Church: Visitors to the homes can
see them in any order they wish, and
at the beginning, middle, or end stop
in at the Blyth Christian Reformed
Church for complimentaryrefreshments, and a chance to enterto win door prizes and takeadvantage of a mini-bazaar. People
also have the option of just coming
to the church for refreshments and
the bazaar. No ticket is required for
the event at the church.
Tickets are $15 each and available
from the Gift Cupboard in Blyth,
Nature’s Nest in Londesborough,Benjamin Moore Paints and TastyTreats and Treasures in Clinton,Dauphin’s Country Store in Walton,
Cinnamon Jim’s in Brussels,
Luann’s Flowers in Goderich, The
Co-op in Belgrave and The
Workshop Men’s Clothing in
Wingham. Tickets are also available
from the homeowners.
The topic of sick time came under
fire at Huron County Council’s
Committee of the Whole meeting on
Nov. 17, as Emergency Services
Chief David Lew presented his
monthly report to council.
As it always is around flu season,
Lew said, sick time has become an
issue.
He did acknowledge, however,
that sick time being used was not
being abused by the majority of the
paramedic staff.
“Is the majority of the sick time is
being used by a minority of
employees?” the question was
asked, and Lew said that was the
case.
Bluewater Councillor David
Johnston said that sick time has been
an issue that council has discussed in
regards to paramedics since 2008.
Lew said that in many instances,
his hands are tied due to the
agreement with the union, but that
negotiations are coming up once
again.
Councillor John Bezaire asked that
a special in-camera session of
council be held before the
Committee of the Whole meeting in
December, so that strategies can be
discussed going into further
negotiations.
Bezaire was also concerned that
every paramedic in Huron County
was getting painted with the same
brush.
“We have some bad apples in an
otherwise great bushel of apples,” he
said.
