Recent days saw new levels of violence directed at Iraq’s Christians. Eight days after the attack on Baghdad’s main Catholic Church that left more than 50 worshippers dead, militants detonated more than 14 bombs in Christian suburbs, killing at least four and wounding about 30. Since then, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an al Qaeda front, has warned of a new wave of attacks on Christians “wherever they can be reached... we will open upon them the doors of destruction and rivers of blood”. After practising their religion for the better part of 2,000 years on soil trod by the same Christians, the Iraqi faithful are now questioning whether they will be able to continue. It was never the intent of the Bush administration to displace an ancient Christian community. This year in particular, Advent is a struggle for me. It is a struggle for me especially when many churches and pulpits proclaim peace and goodwill, our brothers and sisters in Iraq are perishing. The so-called Jihadists have vowed to limit the movement of all Christian activities and no government is advocating on their behalf. Had the attacks been on Muslims, they would have protested in large numbers. Where is the hope for the few faithful in Iraq? Where is the voice crying on their behalf? Are we in peace when the lives of the faithful are in pieces? My candid plea to our leaders and individuals alike is to voice our opposition to the plight of the Christians not only in Iraq but Afghanistan where our tax money is spent on people who are hostile to peoples of other faiths. May your grace enliven us, strengthen us and defend us, as we await your coming in glory. Minister pleads for united voice against violence
