Brussels Library last week.
President Ruth Axtmann
conducted a brief business meeting
before starting the program. The roll
call was: What do you do for your
own Heart Health?” which was
answered by nordic walking, eating
salmon once a week, Wii exercises,
palates, drinking lots of water and
avoiding salt, as some of the replies.
Marion Godkin presented
exercises as her part of the program.
The heart is a muscle and needs
exercise, but suggested not doing
exercises two to three hours before
bedtime, as they raise the body’stemperature. Heart target ratechanges with the various age groupsand always check with your doctor
before beginning any new exercise
regime.
Margaret McInroy demonstrated
using the Nintendo Wii as an
exercise workout. The Wii enables
you to participate in different
activities such as: bowling, bike
riding, walking and numerous others
right from your own home. Margaret
was able to show that she is not very
adept at riding the bicycle – on the
Wii – which provided some laughter.
The Wii will calculate the amount of
calories that are burned while doing
exercises.
Helen Craig gave input on stress
relief. The number one stress
reliever is laughter. She then
introduced Monique Baan who does
nordic walking. It is a low-impact
and convenient way to increase the
health benefits of walking. Monique
showed the proper method of doing
this exercise and said it is good for
the core muscles. Although it could
be done indoors she suggested that
outdoors is better, that way one stays
away from slippery floors. Monique
had everyone examine a set of poles
and showed how to adjust them for
your own height. Improper use of
the poles while walking could hurt
your shoulders and arms.
Ruth spoke to the nutrition part of
being heart smart. She gave
everyone a Heart Smart Fitness
Wheel as well as other informative
material provided by the Heart and
Stroke Foundation. She said
everyone is familiar with the rule of
eating at least four to 10 servings of
vegetables and fruits per day. There
is a strong need to limit the amountof salt consumed each day and todrink lots of water. Skippingbreakfast is not a good idea at any
age as it is the most important meal
of the day.
Margaret McMahon had a poster
displaying tips for keeping a healthy
heart. Some of the tips were: have a
10-minute soak in salt water to
relieve stress, snack on walnuts,
look at the fall foliage, include a
siesta even if only for 10 minutes
during the day, read a women’s
magazine, dodge disease by lookingon the sunny side and play a game ordo a puzzle.Marjorie Humphries and Brenda
Perrie provided a healthy lunch with
a wonderful variety of homemade
muffins and fruit kebobs.

NEWS
FROM WALTON
I have had a busy week and
haven’t seen too many Walton folks
to catch up with the news.
There was a community shower
for Kelly McDonald at Duff’s
United Church on Friday evening.
There was a good crowd of around
45 in attendance. Valerie Shortreed
welcomed everyone and introduced
Kelly and her mom, Jo-Ann
McDonald and her mother-in-law-
to-be, Sue Jarosz. Entertainment
was provided by Joelle and Melissa
Glanville clogging to a couple of
numbers. Patty Banks then called
Kelly to the front and gave her a
suitcase packed with her
honeymoon outfit. Kelly was
blindfolded and had to dress in her
new outfit. The result was
hilarious. Words of advice were
read and then the many lovely
gifts were opened. A lovely lunch
of cake and ice cream was
served. Hosts for the evening were
Val, Judy Lee, Patty and Heidi
McClure.
A family shower was held for
Charlene Thompson at the Walton
Hall on Sunday afternoon. Charlene
and fiancé Ben Finlayson will be
married in the new year. The
Finlayson family gathered and
enjoyed a lovely afternoon and
Charlene received many lovely
gifts.
Those in hospital include Marie
McTaggart in Seaforth Hospital.
Leona McDonald is also a patient in
Seaforth after suffering a fall.
Having an unfortunate fall while
enjoying skating is Sandra Cable.
She suffered a serious concussion.
Our best wishes go out to all.
Home for a visit is Linda (Ten
Pas) Lang, from Hope, B.C. She was
home along with her brother
Nathan, to attend the funeral of her
grandmother. She spent the five days
visiting with all of her family
members and stayed with her sister,
Patricia McKay. Henk and Agnes
Ten Pas were thrilled with the extra
visit this year.
Scott and Alicia McDonald have
returned from a five-day trip to
Whistler, B.C. They found it was a
very busy time there, because in
B.C., Nov. 11 is a holiday and then
the children enjoyed a P.D. day from
school the next day. They walked
around Whistler and saw the sights,
but there was no snow, so no skiing.
They went to the aquarium and other
interesting spots around the popular
resort. They stayed at Uncle Neil
McDonald’s place. They returned to
Vancouver on Monday afternoon
and had dinner with Neil and
football buddy, Dave.
The couple left Vancouver on
Tuesday, but didn’t have a great trip
home. Upon arriving at the airport in
the morning, they found out their
flight home was cancelled. They
tried to get on the next flight to
Toronto and it was full. Next option
was to take a flight to Montreal and
then a flight back to Toronto. Option
three was to wait another day. They
took option number two and went to
Montreal, waited, flew to Toronto
and finally arrived home to Walton
at 11 p.m Tuesday evening – a long
day of travel.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Derek Hoegy, Shirley
Ann Boven, Fiona McDonald, Sarah
Williamson, Carl McCallum, Valerie
Shortreed, Ian Wilbee, Donna
McClure, Linda Gingerich, Linda
McDonald and Mitchell McKee.
Happy birthday to all.
