Big weekend
The Wingham Ironmen had a big weekend winning both games of a home-and-home series
with the Goderich Sailors. (Jim Brown photo)
Ironmen take Sailors twice
in home-and-home action
The Wingham Ironmen picked up
four points on the weekend, taking
both ends of the home-and-home
series with the Goderich Sailors.
Like previous games against the
Sailors, the Ironmen struggled in the
first period, managing to take a 2-1
lead in the opening 20 minutes of
both contests.
The Ironmen scored three
unanswered goals in the second
period on Friday, in the game played
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, as they went
on to claim a 7-1 decision over the
Sailors. In Goderich on Saturday, the
Ironmen outscored the host Sailors
in the second period 4-1, to claim a
6-2 victory over Goderich.
Adam Corbet and Cole Pellett
paced the offence on Friday as both
collected three points. Adam Corbett
had two goals and an assist, while
Pellett had a goal and two helpers.
Chris Corbett contributed two goals
to the Wingham offence. Also
scoring were Jackson Martin and
Chase Chapman.
Adam Corbett opened the scoring
on the power play at 4:42 of the first
period. Sam Feagan scored for
Goderich at 7:41 to tie the game.
Martin scored on the power play at
10:27. Aaron Armstrong and Brett
Brophy picked up two assists each.
Following the game, forward Dan
Dery of Blyth said the team was
“dead” to start the game. “We had to
pump ourselves up,” he said. “We
had to pick ourselves up.”
Coach Chad Haggitt noted that
between the first and second period,
the coaching staff told the team that
they had to play better than they
were.
With the Corbett twins getting two
goals each, Haggitt said Chris has
been solid all year, while Adam was
moved up from defence to forward
because of his offence and he has
responded.
With the same two teams meeting
in Goderich the next night, Haggitt
said the Ironmen were going to have
to play better in Goderich than they
did Friday in Wingham.
Chris Corbett had a four-point
game against the Sailors on
Saturday. He scored the last goal of
the game at 18:42 of the middle
period and added three helpers.
Graham Ashcroft had a goal and
an assist with single markers being
tallied by Dan Dery, Justin Jacklin,
Martin and newly-signed Evan
Ducharme of Brussels. Blair
McConnell earned a pair of assists.
Ryan Chambers and Jon
Hunsberger have been released and
will join their minor hockey
organizations immediately.
With the Midget Regional Silver
Stick being held in Wingham this
weekend, the Ironmen are on the
road for a single contest, in
Kincardine on Saturday for a 7 p.m.
game against the Bulldogs.
