THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2010.SportsBrussels native starts in net for US college team Brussels native Brianne Wheeler got the call to start for the Colby Mules Women’s hockey team for their season-opener on Nov. 20. Wheeler, a first-year student at Colby College, made 30 saves in a valiant effort to hold the goal-line against Bowdoin College. For two straight periods, both Wheeler and Bowdoin’s Tara Connolly held the game to a 0-0 tie, which would be broken early in the third by Kayte Holtz of Bowdoin. Wheeler’s teammate Stephanie Scarpato scored two minutes later, forcing overtime, where Bowdoin’s Kim Tess-Wanat would score early. Mules’ Coach David Venditti had a rough season in 2009-10 due to having just one goalie for much of the season. Wheeler was one of three first-year goaltenders chosen to address that issue. Webcasts of the Colby Women’s hockey team are available at the College’s website, www.colby.edu Good job! The F.E. Madill Senior Girls cross-country team travelled to the OFSAA championships in Etobicoke earlier this month. They placed ninth out of 38 teams, despite the majority of the team being stricken with sickness.
