There were, however, several groups opposed to the idea, including the Huron County Federation of Agriculture and some area farmers, who felt that a home being built in the location proposed by the Malletts could impose future restrictions on their agricultural properties. The Huron County Planning Department suggested the municipality deny the application, due to several concerns, including minimum distance separation from a hog barn. The Malletts said they wished to build a home in which they would retire on the property because of the sentimental value that it holds, having been in the family for five generations. There were, however, some unresolved issues, in terms of wherethe minimum distance separationwas being measured from and if thelocation of the house could bemoved. Until those issues could be clarified, Central Huron Council voted to defer the decision. The debate over the amendment became one that has been heard many times at lower-tier councils as well as Huron County Council. While agricultural land is preserved under many zoning bylaws, some councillors have argued that these restrictions should be loosened, and that they are not encouraging young families to move to rural Ontario. Huron East Mayor Joe Seili has said several times at sessions of Huron County Council that declining population and enrollment in rural Ontario schools can be traced back to planning decisions such as these. The issue has been tabled until Huron County planner Susanna Reid comes back to council with detailed information on the property and the minimum distance separation figures that were requested by council.
