The Auburn Lions met with the
Auburn Playground Committee on
Saturday, Nov. 13 to hand in the
final amounts from the Halloween
Dance held on Oct. 30. The Lions
assisted the committee by running
the bar that evening.
The Auburn Lions then surprised
the Playground Committee with an
extra cheque – a donation from the
Lions in the amount of $2,000. The
cheque was presented to Committee
President Juanita Hamp in front of
the current playground equipment in
the Auburn Community Park by
Auburn Lions President Doug
Chamney. Also present were
committee members Marg
Anderson, Gerry Upthegrove and
Koreen Moss along with Lions
members Ken Grigg and Ben Craig.
This donation, along with the
$1,500 raised over the Halloween
weekend, put the total amount raised
by the committee up to $7,000. The
Auburn Playground Committee is
looking to raise $40,000 to purchase
and install new CSA-approved
playground equipment in the ball
park.
A group of young men in the
village are growing mustaches for an
event aptly named Movember.
Movember’s fundraising efforts will
benefit Prostate Cancer Canada.
Ben Craig is one of the members
of this group in Auburn. To make a
pledge to his group's fundraising
effort you can contact Ben directly
at 519-526-1070 or go online to
ca.movember.com and search for
“Auburn Staches” under the “Mo
Crew” heading.
The Huron Chapel will be holding
a Christmas bazaar on Dec. 4 from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors or those who
sell products from home are
welcome to register by contacting
the church or Sandra Garnet. A 10' x
10' area is $20. Come out and do
some local last minute Christmas
shopping.
A meeting has been scheduled at
the Auburn Community Hall on
Monday, Nov. 22 regarding the fire
issues that continue to plague the
village. Village representatives
Jacqui Laporte, Jim Schneider and
Keith Allen have been unsuccessful
in their fight for inclusive coverage
for the village with Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh and there is
new information regarding the fire
coverage in Central Huron.
This meeting is important and may
determine the future of the village’s
representation in this matter. Please
make every attempt to attend.
The Auburn and District Lions
Club, under the direction of
President Doug Chamney, have had
a busy start to their 2010-2011 year.
The club made a cash donation,
and collected community donations
for the Popp family who lost their
home to fire in last August. They
also worked the bar at a Family Fun
Day on Aug. 15, hosted by their
family and friends, which also
raised funds for the family.
The club worked security for the
Huron Pioneer Threshers at their
annual reunion in Blyth on Sept.
11-13. Once again this summer
members provided maintenance at
Manchester Riverside Park, which
is located along the banks of the
Maitland River at the south edge of
the village.
Monthly pancake breakfasts
started again in October which
provide funds for various clubs and
community services. The
breakfasts, along with the annual
community hockey draw and
community birthday calendars, are
the Lions Club’s biggest fundraisers
throughout the year.
Many local organizations have
recently been the recipients of the
club donations and they include:
Midwestern Adult Day Services,
Seaforth All-Girls Marching Band,
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North
Huron, the Huron County Healthy
Hearts program, Auburn Knox
UCW, the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, Blyth Legion Poppy
Fund and the Huron County
Christmas Bureau.
The club has also donated to
several Lions Club-funded
programs including the District
effective speaking contest and
Lions Quest.
During the Health Care Heroes
Radiothon in October, the Lions
Club donated to hospitals in
Goderich, Wingham and Clinton.
The Lions Club is pleased to be
assisting the Auburn Playground
Committee in its quest to raise
$40,000 for new playground
equipment for the Lions
Community Park in the village.
Club members worked at their
recent Halloween dance fundraiser
and just recently decided to
contribute $2,000 to support the
project.
The inaugural Road Hockey Day
in Auburn was held in October in
the village as many teams enjoyed
the beautiful weather to make this
event a resounding success. The
Club has decided to make this event
an annual affair and are looking
forward to the second annual
tournament next year.
Lion Ben Craig has decided to
participate in Movember, a prostate
cancer fundraiser held throughout
the month of November. He has
recruited fellow Lion Ken Grigg as
they grow moustaches and seek
donations to raise funds and
awareness for prostate cancer.
Contact Ben or Ken this month to
help them reach their goal.
“With 34 members, our Club is
probably as stong as it’s ever been.
The addition of many new, younger
Lions in recent years has certainly
invigorated our membership.
Evidence of that is our successful
fundraisers which have allowed us
to contribute financially to so many
causes in our village and
throughout Huron County. Strong
membership and a supportive
community continue to allow us to
impact the lives of so many people,”
Chamney said.
