BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Nov. 14
were Barb and Terry Richmond and
Brenda Brooks. Ushering were
Nicole Kerr, Brenda and Lori
Brooks. The music was under the
direction of Floyd Herman. Reid
Button lit the candles at the front of
the church.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church and drew
everyone’s attention to the
announcements in the bulletin.
Special attention went to the annual
beef supper on Nov. 20 from 4:30 to
7:30 p.m. Adults $14, children 6-12
years $6, five years and under free.
Everyone is welcome.
The call to worship was repeated
in unison. The prayer hymn, “This is
the Day” was sung. The scriptures
were from Exodus 13: 20-22 and
Matthew 2: 9-11.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time. Rev.
Clark had a flashlight with him, not
a big one and not a small one. He
asked the children what a flashlight
did. Some answers were, they light
our way at night. They shine so we
can see. When they had the Lighting
of the Lights on Sunday it made the
courtyard at the Memorial Hall
brighter and people could see the
Nativity Scene. We are like the lights
when we are doing something for
someone else, we are noticed like
the lights. The children said a prayer
with the congregation and went
downstairs for their time of
Fellowship. Reid Button carried the
Christ Candle down to Sunday
School.
The next hymn was “Open My
Eyes That I May See” was sung.Rev. Clark’s message to the adultswas “Giving Light to theCommunity.” Some people in ourcommunity stand out like the lights. Many of the Citizens of the Year arepeople who stand out in ourcommunity. They are involved for
the good of the community. They are
leaders in our community. In the
scripture, it tells that the people were
covered by a cloud in the daytime
and the stars at night as they
travelled throughout the country.
God gives us the light we need to
be a good member of the
community. We all need people to
show us love.
Rev. Clark challenged the
congregation to collect 200 pounds
of food for the food bank in the next
month as there are about 200
families that use the Food Bank in
Wingham. He was also going to
challenge other churches to do the
same. The choir sang an anthem of a
Melody of Hymns called, “You
Raise Me Up”. The receiving of the
offering was followed by the
offering hymn, the offertory prayer
and the singing of the hymn, “My
Faith Looks Up to Thee”. The
prayers for the world was followed
by the singing of The Lord’s Prayerand the last hymn, “God Be WithYou ’Til We Meet Again.” Thechoral response, “Lord We Pray” tothe tune of Edelweiss was sung afterthe commissioning and thebenediction. Everyone was invitedfor cookies and coffee after
church.

The students of Blyth Public
School have begun to bring in their
pop cans and pennies for Kenya. The
Grade 2/3 class is miles ahead of all
the other classes. So please continue
to bring in more aluminum pop cans,
not tin cans, for collection. And also
bring in any pennies or spare
change.
In Mrs. Armstrong’s class, the
students have created Glogs for
science, to show either man’s impact
on the environment or stewardship
of the earth. A Glog is a special
program that is similar to a blog
except with a few subtle differences.
The Grade 7/8 students are also
continuing to complete their weekly
reading responses and are
considering independent reading
through the lens of a reading
strategy (like inferring or predicting)
and/or comment on the author’s
style.
The Grade 5/6 class will be
studying and then writing myths and
legends. They are also working on
reading response journals which are
due every Friday, which reflect the
reading strategies they are learning
about in class. In Social Studies, the
students will be forming their own
political parties as they study the
Canadian Government. In Math the
students will be looking at decimals
and how they relate to money.
Ms Badham will be co-ordinating
the Christmas Concert this week.
Rehearsals for “Santa’s Online
Adventure” will be beginning
shortly. The date for the concert is
Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. The Grade 6/7s have
also started to learn about New
France. The students will be reading
about the Long Gun Registry.
The Grade 1/2 class has been
investigating the virtue of Courage.
They have enjoyed a variety of read
aloud activities and made some text-
to-self connections at the oral and
written level. The class’s favourite
read aloud is “A Teaspoon of

RESTRAINING GRACE
(John MacDuff,“The Faithful Promiser”)
“Satan has desired to have you--that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for
you--that your faith may not fail.” Luke 22:31, 32
What a scene does this unfold! Satan tempting--Jesus praying! Satan sifting--Jesus
pleading! “The strong man assailing”--“the stonger than the strong” beating him back!
Believer! here is the past history and present secret of your safety in the midst of
temptation! An interceding Saviour was at your side, saying to every threatening wave,
“Thus far shall you go--and no farther!” God often permits His people to be on the very
verge of the precipice, to remind them of their own weakness; but never farther than
the brink! The restraining hand and grace of Omnipotence is ready to rescue them,
“Although he stumbles--yet he shall not be utterly cast down.” And why? “For the Lord
upholds him with His right hand!”
The wolf may be prowling for his prey, but what can he do, when the almighty Shepherd
is always there, tending with the watchful eye that “neither slumbers nor sleeps!”
Who cannot subscribe to the testimony, “When my foot slipped, Your mercy, O Lord,
held me up!” Who can look back on his past pilgrimage, and fail to see it crowded with
Ebenezers, with this inscription: “You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from
tears, and my feet from falling!” My soul, where would you have been this day--had you
not been “kept” by the power of God?
“Hold me up--and I shall be safe!” Psalm 119:117
