V.I.N. A MUST (Vehicle Identification No.) The Blyth/Brussels Atom Girls have one tie and two wins to their credit so far for the 2010-11 season. On Saturday, Nov. 13, the teams hosted Durham. The team played a strong offensive game, netting eight goals. Scoring started up with a goal from Sarah Mitchell, assisted by Morgan Willie. Centre Mitchell would find the net again in the first with an unassisted goal. The girls added three more goals in the second period. Goal credits went to Dana Dolmage, Willie, and Alexandra (Bobbie) Martin. Each goal had a single assist from Mitchell, Sarah Strome and Willie, putting the Dogs in the lead 5-0. Durham found their way through defense to score their first goal. The team continued a strong attack on the visitors with three more goals scored in the third period. Brookelyn Johnston proved she could hold her own, scoring two of the three goals unassisted. The third period also saw Durham take advantage of Blyth/Brussels’ offensive strategy and they managed to net three goals as well in the third. Scoring continued until the end of the game. With :01 on the clock, defenseman Martin scored her second goal of the game with an assist by Willie. Blyth/Brussels won by a final score of 8-4. The team’s home opener took place Saturday, Nov. 6, with a visit from Normanby. The girls started the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal from Strome. The lead would be short-lived as Normanby tied it up 21 seconds later. In the second period the team took the lead again with a goal by Alicia Ireland, assisted by Willie and Strome. Mitchell netted an unassisted goal in the third period and solid goaltending by Clarrisa Gordon secured the win. Blyth/Brussels finished the game to win by a score of 3-1. On Friday, Nov. 5, the girls travelled to Saugeen Shores for their first game of the season. Both teams played solid games. Saugeen scored first with 1:33 left in the first period. The second period would see no goals scored, with Julia Beaven between the pipes. The first goal of the season for the team was scored four minutes into the third period. Second-year Atom, Strome carried the puck for an awesome unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1. Saugeen snuck one more in with 2:33 left in the third. The girls continued a strong offensive game, bringing the goalie in to add an extra attacker. With 44 seconds left in the third, Sarah Mitchell netted the tying goal with an assist from Ireland. The game, however, ended in a 2- 2 tie. Hitting the ice Mitchell travelled to Blyth on the evening of Nov. 8 for some Bantam Local League hockey action. The Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre was host to a broomball tournament over the weekend, hosting teams from all over the province. Here Palmerston took on Innisfil in the PeeWee division. (Jim Brown photo) On Saturday, Nov. 13, veteran centre, Marcie Landman scored two goals to lead the Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning to three out of four points in Lower Lakes League action. Landman scored the only goal of the game on a clever passing play with Brooklyn Irwin to give Saugeen a 1-0 win over the London Devilettes. Goaltender Emily Kelly of Port Elgin picked up the shutout, her third in two weeks. On Sunday, Nov. 14, the Lightning hosted the Bluewater Hawks in a match pitting the first and second- place teams. Scoreless through two periods, the Hawks scored midway through the third period. In the final minute of the game, with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Landman was able to score the equalizer on a setup from Hannah Davidson and Irwin to tie it 1-1. Standout work by defencemen Ottewell, Murray, Garrow, Gibson, Reid and McGavin limited the Hawks to only 11 shots in the game. Midget goalie gets third shut-out Brussels Bantams 5-3 since opener The Brussels Bantam Rep Bulls are off to a great start this season. They have posted five wins and three losses. Racking up the points and defending their opponents are Brody Ten Pas, Ben Hruska, Jason Baxter, Brock McLean, Colton Hastings, Scott Dolmage, Wyatt Ducharme, Hayden Ten Pas, Josh Bridge, Reece McArter, Luke McCutcheon, Anthony Vader, Tanner Cardiff and Tim Waechter. Between the pipes this season are Austin Jamieson-Johnston and Matt McNichol. The coaching staff consists of Brian Ten Pas, Ty Sebastian, Pam McLean and Michelle McNichol. Their home games are Wednesdays at 9 p.m. at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. The Blyth Peewee Rep Bulldogs’ winning streak is at six games after defeating the BCH Ice Dogs by a score of 13-5 on Nov. 10. Scoring goals were Chad Treble with three, Drew Bromley with two, Brenden Howson with two, Jacob Coultes with one, Jordan Hubbard with one, Brandon Marshall with two, and Cody Treble with two goals. Earning assists were Brenden Howson with three, Chad and Cody Treble two each, and singles going to Dawson and Jacob Coultes, Hunter Dale, Jordan Hubbard and Curtis Weber. Jeremy Wilts was solid in goal to help secure the win. PeeWees continue streak Last weekend was a big one in Howick, as it was sponsor weekend and all teams played at home. The day started off with the Saugeen Maitland PeeWee Lightning playing against Goderich. The girls were unable to get a lucky bounce and the game ended in a scoreless tie. The Saugeen Maitland Bantam A Lightning played Chatham and it was another close match, which ended in a 1-1 tie with Tori Terpstra scoring the team’s only goal. The Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA Lightning went up against Waterloo with another tough battle. Waterloo scored first, but Saugeen Maitland came out in the third and Hailey Herman scored early to end the game with a 1-1 tie. PeeWee, Bantam A and Bantam AA Lightning tie at home
