The struggles continue for the
Wingham Ironmen in the Western
Junior C Hockey League.
After dropping a 5-2 decision to
the Mitchell Hawks on Friday
evening at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, the Ironmen
struggled to a 6-4 victory over the
cellar-dwelling Mount Forest
Patriots.
The Ironmen quickly found
themselves down by a pair of goals
on Friday. Brendan Nicholson gave
the Hawks a 1-0 lead 56 seconds into
the game and Patrick McLellan
made it 2-0 at 1:48 of the first period.
The Ironmen were able to tie the
game by the end of the opening
period.
Cory MacDonald got the Ironmen
to within one at 7:02 of the first
period. Adam Corbett and goaltender
Brandon MacDonald assisted on the
power play marker. Christ Corbett
netted the equalizer at 11:58 with
assist going to Aaron Armstrong and
Tyler Kellum.
Tyler Van Drunen gave Mitchell a
3-2 lead at 13:14 of the second
period with a power play marker.
McLellan and Andrew Van Vliet
added two third-period markers, just
over two minutes apart, to reach the
final 5-2 score.
This was the same Mitchell Hawks
team that the Ironmen defeated 7-3
on the opening night of the season.
At that time, coach Chad Haggitt
said he expected the Hawks to be one
of the two top teams in the league
this season.
When asked, following Friday’s
contest, if this was the Mitchell team
he expected on the opening night,
Haggitt replied, “we should beat that
team every time we play them.”
He added the offence has been
struggling the past few games. “It’s
time for some kind of a shake up,” he
said. “Some of these guys need an
eye opener.”
Haggitt said he wasn’t ruling out
trades or limiting ice time of some of
the players.
In regards to the game against
Mount Forest, Haggitt said the
outcome will depend on which team
shows up. “If we play like we did the
first nine games, we should win. “If
we play like we have the past five,
who knows what the outcome will
be,” he said.
The Ironmen play two games this
weekend. They travel to Kincardine
on Friday for an 8:30 p.m. contest
against the Bulldogs and then host
the league-leading Walkerton Hawks
on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m.

Coach says Ironmen’s offensive lineup “needs an eye opener”
Three members of the Wingham
Ironmen have been selected for the
Western Junior C All-Star team
which will play the all-stars of the
Georgian Bay Mid-Ontario League
in Alliston on Nov. 21. The three are
defenceman Adam Corbett and
forwards Chris Corbett of Brussels
and Aaron Armstrong.
Six members of the Ironmen have
been selected to the prospects team.
They are goaltender Brandon
MacDonald, defencemen Brett
Brophy and Collin Whitfield of
Blyth and forwards Travis Bowman,
Jackson Martin and Justin Jacklin.
Ryan Chambers was selected as an
alternate. Chad Haggitt of Blyth is
coach of the team and Jamie
McCallum of Morris-Turnberry is
the general manager of the team.
The prospects game is scheduled
for 1:30 p.m., with the all-star game
going at 3:30 p.m.
Defenceman Adam Corbett said it
feels good to be selected as an all-
star. “This is the first time I’ve been
selected to an all-star team,” he said.
He’ll be able to reunite with
players he played with in Listowel
as a member of the Junior B
Cyclones. It will also mark his first
opportunity to play in the Alliston
arena since as a member of the
Essex 73s when they won the
Schmalz Trophy, emblematic of
Ontario Junior C Hockey
supremacy.

Three Ironmen picked for All-Stars
Never give up
It was cross-town hockey action on Nov. 4 with Brussels travelling to Blyth for a novice game.

one by a score of 5-2. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Blyth Midget LLteam destroys Stars
The Blyth Midget LL travelled to
Seaforth on Nov. 5 to take on the
Stars and devastated the home team
10-0.
Scoring didn’t open until nine
minutes into the first period when
Austin Sjaarda would find the net
assisted by Kevin Pennington and
Eric Dwyer for the Bulldogs.
In the second period, Sjaarda
would find the net again unassisted,
followed by Tyler Stevenson putting
one past the Stars’ goalie, assisted
by Zach Watson.
After the break between the
second and third, the Bulldogs
decided to turn up the volume with
seven more goals. Stevenson would
find the net three more times,
Steven Ellis would score three,
Dwyer one and Prescott one.
Assists would go to Ellis with
two, Prescott with two and
Ryan Sjaarda, Joel Pizzati,
Johnathon Atkinson all with one
each.
Nathan Watson would hold the
net for the 10-0 shutout.
Tough times
After a loss and a tight win against an opponent that the
coaching staff felt they should have beat handily, the
Wingham Ironmen may be looking at making some
changes in the near future. The Ironmen are seen here
playing the Mitchell Hawks in Wingham over the weekend.
