Lightning lose tournament championship shootoutSports
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Bantam A girls hockey team went 3-
2 in the Nike Bauer Invitational
Tournament in Rochester, New York.
The girls started on Friday
morning with a game against the
Markham Stouffville Stars. The girls
came out strong, but fell behind 1-0
in the second period. However the
girls did not give up and Reagan
Kaufman and Jaime Van Loon
(Walkerton) set up Tori Terpstra
(Atwood) for the tying goal. Just
over a minute later Cassidy Mason
scored the game winner making the
final score 2-1.
On Friday evening, the Lightning
took on the Mid Fairfield CT Stars.
Once again the girls fell behind 1-0
before surging ahead to 3-1 in the
third to win the game.
Kaufman scored with assists going
to Terpstra and Jordyn Sholdice
(Brussels). Seven seconds later
Mason fired a puck past the Stars
goalie to take the lead. Terpstra
added an insurance marker set up by
Sholdice.
On Saturday morning, the girls
had a date with the East Coast
Wizards. Unlike the first two games,
the Lightning came out strong and
scored the first three goals and
holding the Wizards off for a 3-1
victory. Scoring for the Lightning
were Kaufman, Terpstra and Mason
with assists going to Delany Dupon
and Mason.
On Saturday afternoon, the girls
faced off against the Alliance
Bulldogs from Texas. The Lightning
found the back of the net first, with
Kaufman scoring with help from
Taylor MacDonald (Mount Forest).
But the girls from Texas battled back
to hand the Lightning their first loss
of the tournament. Elyse Wolski
(Tiverton) made some great saves to
keep the score close.
The 3-1 record put them in first
place and earned them a date with
the Orangeville Tigers on Sunday
morning. Orangeville opened the
scoring, but Kaufman scored an
unassisted goal to tie the game. Both
teams then battled back and forth,
through three periods, then overtime
(one five-minute four-on-four period
and a five-minute-three-on-three
period. But that settled nothing.
Then it was off to a shootout.
Unfortunately the girls lost the
shootout 3-2 and had to settle for a
top-four finish in the tournament.
Several players did not find the
score sheet, but were still very
important for the successful
weekend. Sam Pruden (Howick) was
the hardest-working player on the
ice every shift. Emma MacMillan
caused lots of trouble for the other
teams in the front of the net for every
power play. Rebecca Rier was a
physical force in the corners. Ally
Speilmacher was all over the ice
making great passes and back
checking, while Tori Harshman was
strong all weekend long and even
scored a beautiful goal in the
shootout loss.

Brussels Atoms win, lose and draw over weekend
On Sunday afternoon, the Atom
Bulls travelled to Zurich to take on
the Thunder. The game was close
for much of the contest but once the
Bulls found the net, they just kept
coming.
Noah Terpstra recorded the first
three goals, one in every period, for
a natural hattrick. Assisting on the
first goal was Nolan Johnston. The
second goal was assisted by Avery
McArter and the third goal was
assisted by Ted Jacklin and Brett
Stevenson. With a little over four
minutes remaining, Pipe scored
assisted by Johnston and Jarron
Thompson. Pipe made it 5-0 when
he scored unassisted.
Zurich spoiled Nick McArter’s
shutout bid when they scored once
at the three-minute mark and then
again with 12.6 seconds remaining.
The final score was 5-2 in favour
of the Bulls.
On Saturday, the Bulls travelled
to Wingham for an afternoon
exhibition game at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex. The
Bulls never allowed Wingham to
walk over them and the first period
ended scoreless. Wingham scored
first but the Bulls soon tied the score
with Terpstra assisted by Pipe at the
7:13 mark of the second. Wingham
regained the lead into the third
period with a score of 2-1. Wingham
added another goal to take a two-
goal lead. Cue the comeback. With
only 3:56 left, A. McArter broke
through the defence, assisted by
Hudson Smith, and then A. McArter
scored his second of the game
assisted by Pipe to tie the game at
three with 1:30 left in the game.
Thompson was solid in net again.
On Friday night, the Bulls played
the first game of a three-game
weekend for the Atom Bulls as they
travelled to Seaforth to take on the
Stars. The game proved to be a
wake-up call after a long day as the
Stars handed the Bulls a 10-0
drubbing.
Nov. 2 saw the Atoms travel to
Milverton to take on the Drives.
Milverton opened the scoring late in
the first period but that seemed to
wake up the Bulls as Pipe assisted
by N. McArter got the Bulls on the
board with 2:46 left in the first and
then Pipe, unassisted, scored 13
seconds later.
Milverton scored twice in the
second period to take the lead, but
Pipe scored again assisted by
Terpstra with only 1.9 seconds left
in the period to knot the game at
three each. The third period solved
nothing as Thompson and his Drive
counterpart were solid in net as the
game remained tied at three.
The next action for the Atom
Bulls is next Sunday in Listowel at
3 p.m.
The Blyth Bantam Local League
Bulldogs hosted the Mount Forest
Rams on Monday, Nov. 1 and put
on a great show.
Blyth struck first getting one by
Blyth’s netminder Dalton Carey
approximately five minutes into the
first period. Quinton Sjaarda put
Blyth on the board with 8:29 left in
the first. Mount Forest struck back
twice putting two more in Blyth’s
net. Curtis Raynard got Blyth their
second of the night with assists
going out to Daymien Brak and
Ryan Plunkett.
The period ended with Blyth
down 3-2.
The second period was a shutout
at both ends of the ice. There were
also a number of penalties on both
sides. Mount Forest was able to
find the back of the net in the dying
minutes of the second to put them
up by two.
Mount Forest struck first again in
the third, followed quickly with a
goal from Kyle Pollard assisted by
Jeremy Grisdale. Mount Forest got
two more unanswered goals. To
finish the third, Sjaarda got his
second of the game.
The final score was 7-4 in favour
of Mount Forest.
