HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-11-11, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2010.By Jo-Ann McDonaldIt is 11 o’clock on the 11th day of
the 11th month. It is Remembrance
Day. The world will stand still in
silence to remember those who
made the ultimate sacrifice for all
future generations. We hope that you
are one of the millions, along with
our families, that stop and reflect on
the importance of Remembrance
Day. We hope you have been
wearing your poppy proudly, over
your heart, to honour the over
117,000 men and women who gave
their lives in defence of Canada.
Remembrance Day has been
recognized since 1931, when the
Royal Canadian Legion pressured
Parliament to amend the ArmisticeDay Act to ensure Nov. 11 would be
set aside as a day to pay special
tribute to those “who gave their lives
that freedom might prevail.” It is the
Royal Canadian Legion’s purpose
and duty to remind its communities
and fellow Canadians to remember
those who fought for our freedom. It
is up to every Canadian to perpetuate
the memory of the fallen, so our
children and future generations will
remember the sacrifices of the past
generations. Freedom is the luxury
we enjoy because of the sacrifice of
many. Let us remember them on this
Remembrance Day and always.
The general meeting of the Branch
was held last week. The groupdiscussed the Branch bylaws
required by Provincial Command
and passed the draft proposals.
Requests for funds were dealt with
including the Brussels Santa Claus
Parade donations. The Nevada
chairman had reported that the
current licence is finished and a new
one will be applied for.
Remembrance Day plans are in
place and hopefully there will be a
good turnout. Padre Sandra Cable
has been notified and is prepared.
The church service will be at
Brussels United Church.
The Thursday night darts had 12
darters coming out. The night is
open to all whenever they can.
The first-place team was Roger
McHardy, Penny Reynolds and Glen
Zehr. The second-place team was
Greta Zehr and Gord Jacklin. The
high shot was by Gord with 117.
There will be no darts tonight, but
they will resume Nov. 18.
The Friday night supper of
chicken breast was enjoyed by just
over 30 folks and this week will be
roast beef.
The annual craft show and bake
sale was held on Saturday at the
Branch. There were 16 vendors
offering their wares. They included
knitting, woodworking, flowers,children’s mittens, Epicure,
Tupperware and Christmas gift bags
and ornaments. Chairman Linda
Bird, along with her helpers, did a
great job.
There is still room for anyone
wishing to go on the casino trip to
Brantford but you have to contact
Wanda Walker at 519-887-8465 as
soon as possible. The cost is $20 and
you will receive a $10 play voucher.
The bus leaves the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre at 10
a.m. on Nov. 17 and is back around
7 p.m. Call today if interested.
What gorgeous days we had on
the weekend – a great opportunity to
scan the countryside or do those last
few jobs. The sunshine put the mood
in a good spot so lots of things were
possible. Wood cutting, leaf raking
or mulching, plowing, going for a
drive, planting and of course
general tidy time, all things that got
done.
Lots of good reports from the feast
that Duff’s United Church in Walton
provided for the community last
week at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. Fall is a
great time to do comparison eating
in this area and none fall short on
good taste.
Brussels United Church was
celebrating years in service on
Sunday. Each anniversary brings
different memories by the people
who attend and what impact the
congregation had on their lives. Nice
comments are heard as the
memories unfold to be told to a
different audience in a different
time. Members and visitors were
impressed by the worship service
offered by Dave Williams from
Perth County as well as the amazing
singing voice of Laura Elligsen.
Sandra Cable, our minister, Glenda
Morrison, our organist and choir
leader and our faithful choir added
their talents to the service as well.
Being a church, we celebrated with
lunch and a good time was had by
all.
Birthdays and anniversaries are
times to consider the past and look
to the future. Established churches
are in the unfortunate position of
being just that, established, and that
often means being taken for granted.
Attendance and finances are the
measure for their future. If you are
on the membership list of a local
church and do not support or attend,
do not get excited in the next few
years if you get notice of its closing.
Community needs and people
change. Churches are no exception.
Fragile is probably a good word to
use as local congregations look to
the future. Are you part of that
future? Let them know.
Many good television programs
have been available this week,
offering details to the lives of
various veterans, helping their
stories come alive. Show your
appreciation and support today at
the cenotaph.
Take care of yourself.

Too good to wait
There isn’t a person in this world who can resist a bag of
cookies, as Caleb Koch demonstrated at Saturday’s bake
sale and craft show at the Brussels Legion. The three-year-
old Caleb, and his five-year-old sister Madison, were eager
to break into their newly-purchased treats. (Vicky Bremner photo)
