HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-11-04, Page 27As the end of October has comethe bicycle collection for Bicyclesfor Humanity has closed. The Huron Chapter of Bicyclesfor Humanity is delighted with the
huge response from communities in
Huron and Perth. Seven hundred
used bicycles have been received to
send to Namibia, Africa. Thank you
to all who donated used bicycles so
that lives can be changed halfway
around the world.
In Namibia, the shipping
container will be transformed into a
bicycle workshop and the bicycles
will be refurbished by people in
Namibia who have been trained as
bicycle mechanics. The bicycles
will then be sold at an affordable
price for to local people. Some of
the bicycles will be donated to
health care workers and other
people in difficult situations. Having
a bicycle can improve access to
food, water, employment,
healthcare, education and social
opportunities. The bicycles collected arecurrently stored at Spring BreezesGreenhouses near Blyth and awaitshipping and the gathering of the
finances. Purchasing a container and
paying for all the shipping costs
amounts to $12,000 per container of
350 bikes.
Anyone wishing to help out
financially can write a cheque to the
Blyth Christian Reformed Church,
with the memo written to Bicycles
for Humanity. Send your cheques
to the church treasurer, Tony
Verburg, RR 1, Auburn, Ontario,
N0M 1E0.
This project belongs to the people
of Huron/Perth who have
generously donated their used
bicycles.
