In both cases where incumbent
school board trustees were running
for re-election in Huron and Perth
Counties, there were upsets in the
Oct. 25 municipal election. That
means the Avon Maitland District
School Board will have a distinctly
new look effective Dec. 7: with five
new faces and four returning
trustees.
The Huron-Perth Catholic
District School Board, meanwhile,
will have one new member,
following a three-way race to
replace retiring Huron East/North
Perth/Perth East representative
Vince McInnes.
In the Avon Maitland board, both
Tina Trachsel and Willie Laurie
were defeated in their efforts to
retain seats around the table.
Trachsel, a three-term trustee who
spent much of that time as the
board’s representative at the
Ontario Public School Boards’
Association, lost out in Perth East
to newcomer Julie Moore. And
Laurie, who was selected by the
board to fill out the remainder of
Shelley Kaastra’s term in Huron
East/Central Huron (Kaastra left
two years ago to pursue other
opportunities), placed second in a
three-way race behind Robert
Hunking.
For the board’s 2010-11
inaugural meeting Dec. 7 (at which
a chair and vice-chair will be
determined), they’ll be joined by
returning trustees Colleen Schenk
(northeast Huron), Al Sygrove
(Goderich/northwest Huron),
Randy Wagler (Bluewater/South
Huron) and Jenny Versteeg (North
Perth), as well as three other
newcomers. Lynette Geddes was
acclaimed for Perth South/West
Perth following the retirement of
Carol Bennewies; and Michael
Bannerman and Alyson Kent were
elected from a field of four in the
race to replace outgoing Stratford
representatives Doug Pratley and
Meg Westley.
The five-member Catholic board,
meanwhile, will welcome newly-
elected Amy Cronin – reintroducing
a female presence to the board of
trustees that has been absent for the
past four years.
According to Avon Maitland
communications manager Steve
Howe, new trustees from around
southwestern Ontario are invited by
the Ministry of Education to attend
a day-long orientation session on
Nov. 18 in London. He added the
local board generally also hosts
some sort of introductory training.
