Ron and Sharon Douglas, who
have introduced pig farming to mil-
lions of consumers in the past 20
years, are winners of the 2010 Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
Award for outstanding contribution
to agriculture.
The Douglases, who farm near
Clifford, operate the Pigmobile for
Ontario Pork which goes to the
Canadian National Exhibition every
summer, where it is seen by a half-
million fairgoers and the Royal
Winter Fair where 4,000 students
a day see pigs of various sizes
kept in comfort in the glass-sided
trailer.
The Pigmobile is busy nearly 100
days a year, said Ron Douglas, who
was lured to the annual meeting of
the Federation to make a presenta-
tion on the program, then was sur-
prised to be presented with the
award.
“This is really the icing on the
cake,” he said in receiving the award.
“This really makes it all worth-
while.”
Sharon Douglas said she had con-
spired to get her husband to
the meeting but was surprised
when she found out she was a co-
recipient.
In presenting the award Wayne
Black, federation president, also
praised the couple for their work in
their local community, and Ron for
his work with the Ontario Farm
Animal Council and as a
former director from Huron to
Ontario Pork.
In discussing the Pigmobile,
Douglas said it swings into action
about March each year, going to
events to educate school children
about farming, then goes to fairs
throughout the summer and recently
has been on hand at “work fairs” in
which people learn about job oppor-
tunities in the pork industry.
The Pigmobile is booked years in
advance to attend the International
Plowing Match where more than
80,000 people will eventually see
the vehicle.
Ron Douglas said telling the story
of agriculture to consumers was
rewarding work.
Congratulations
Ron and Sharon Douglas, right, were presented with the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture’s award for an outstanding contribution to agriculture by president Wayne Black,
at the federation’s annual meeting on Oct. 28. The couple operates the Pigmobile for
Ontario Pork, which tours the province and reaches thousands of people each year. (Keith
