NEWS
FROM AUBURN
It was a busy weekend in the
village. Many little ghouls and
goblins came out to the Auburn
Community Hall to celebrate
Halloween on Friday evening. The
Auburn Playground Committee was
overwhelmed by the attendance.
Families from near and far came to
participate in the Family Halloween
Night while J.C. Coutts from 101.7
The One morning show played
music. It was a packed house.
The Halloween Dance on
Saturday night was equally as
successful. There was a great
turnout. Prizes for best costumes
were given to “Gene Simmons”
(who is believed to be Jeff Nesbitt),
John Hulley for his inflatible
wrestler costume and Bev Lamb and
Paul Cooke for their inmate
costumes.
The numbers are not in yet from
the events, but will be available next
week. The Auburn Playground
Committee has erected a “goal
chart” on the front of the Auburn
Community Hall to let residents
know their progress. A big “thank
you” goes out to the Auburn Lions
for their help with these events, as
well as to J.C. Coutts for the
entertainment. It is great to get the
community together and have some
fun!
With that in mind, the Auburn
Horticultural Society would like toremind residents that there will be ameeting on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7p.m. at the Auburn Community Hall.Guest speakers, florist Susan St.Louis and Linda Wilson, will be
providing ideas for seasonal
decorating. Come and bring a
friend – everyone is welcome, lunch
will be served. There will be a free
draw prize ticket to anyone who
brings someone who has not
attended a Horticultural meeting.
Please contact Karen Redmond at
519-526-7633 or Tiffany Craig at

PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN
New pres from Auburn
Marinus Bakker, RR3, Auburn,
was elected president of the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture at
the organization’s annual meeting in
Holmesville, Oct. 28.
Bakker, who was unopposed,
succeeds Wayne Black, also of RR3,
Auburn who retired after serving
two years.
In accepting his position, Bakker
praised the work of Black in his two
years as president and for attending
many meetings to speak on behalf of
Huron’s farmers.
Black said being president
allowed him to meet many
wonderful people.
He said the federation’s board of
directors was made up of many
diverse people bringing different
views to any subject. When a policy
comes before them, the directors
“rip it apart, chew on it for a while
and put it back together in a way that
helps agriculture”.
He also praised the work of the
public relations committee which
created a new logo, was designing a
new website and was exploring the
use of social media as a way of
advocating for agriculture.
Acclaimed first vice-president
was Joe Vermunt of Zurich while
Carol Leeming of Seaforth was
acclaimed second vice-president.
Local township directors include:
Colborne, Geoff McMullen; Hullett,
Carman Drost; Morris, Pat Jamieson
and East Wawanosh, Joan Vincent.
Among those acclaimed as
directors at large were Steve
Webster, Ian Scott and Stephen
Thompson.
Elected to the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture’s Policy Advisory
Committee were Ken Scott for
Huron East (comprising the former
townships of Howick, Morris,
McKillop and Turnberry); Wayne
Black for Huron West, (Goderich,
Colborne, Ashfield, East and West
Wawanosh and Hullett) and Wayne
Hamilton for Huron South (Hay,
Stephen, Usborne, Stanley and
Tuckersmith).
Elected delegates for Huron West
were Joan Vincent, Bruce Bergsma
and Jeff Klomps.
Delegates from Huron East are
Steven Webster and Christa Eckert,
with one vacancy to be filled. South
Huron delegates are Carol Leeming,
Bev Hill and Grant Jones.
