Ironmen drop game against Walkerton Hawks 12-6
Splitting hairs
The Wingham Ironmen took to the ice once again over the
weekend, splitting their games, as they did on the previous
weekend as well. (Jim Brown photo)
After struggling to a 4-1 decision
over the Mount Forest Patriots last
Friday evening at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex, the
Wingham Ironmen travelled to
Walkerton on Saturday and were
defeated 12-6 by the league-leading
Hawks.
There was no scoring in Friday’s
game at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex until 17:05 of
the first period when Cole Pellett
tallied with the help from Travis
Bowman and Collin Whitfield. The
Patriots evened the score with 26.6
seconds showing on the clock as Jon
Aitken took advantage of the
Ironmen playing with two players in
the penalty box.
Tyler Kellum netted what provedto be the winning goal at 14:32 of the
second period with Aaron Armstrong
and Adam Corbett earning the
assists.
Jackson Martin gave the Ironmen a
two-goal advantage at 2:45 of the
third period. Assisting on the
powerplay marker were Chris
Corbett and Brett Brophy.
At 18:11 of the final period, Cory
MacDonald gave the Ironmen a 4-1
lead.
Assisting on the even strength goal
were Graham Ashcroft and Wade
Stephenson.
Coach Chad Haggitt said he was
happy with the two points, but it was
a tough way to get them.
“We knew they were a young,
hard-working team,” the coach said
of the Patriots. He noted the Ironmen
“kind of” followed their game plan, but it was hard to follow when a
team is being outworked.
The second Wingham goal was the
turning point of the game for the
Ironmen, Haggitt said.
Defenceman Collin Whitfield of
Blyth said they need to play better
than they did against Mount Forest if
they are to win more games.
“They are just a hard-working
team,” he said. “We didn’t play one
of our better games.” “We are going
to have to improve for our next
game,” said Whitfield.
The Ironmen are at home on
Friday as they host the Mitchell
Hawks beginning at 8 p.m. at the
complex.
The Ironmen travel to Mount
Forest on Saturday for a 7 p.m.
contest against the Patriots.

Midget Lightning win Hocktoberfest
Saugeen Maitland captain, Gina
Murray went end-to-end to score the
winning goal in overtime against
Aurora to give the Lightning the
Midget AA championship win at the
Annual International Hoctoberfest
tournament in Windsor last
weekend.
Highlighting the championship
victory was the exceptional play of
defencemen, Georgia Ottewell, Gina
Murray, Kelly Garrow, Abbey
Gibson, Ashley Reid and Abby
McGavin by only allowing three
goals in six games while goaltender,
Stephanie Sluys came through with
three shutouts and a goals-against-
average of 0.5 for the weekend.
In round-robin play, the Lightning
tied Sault Ste. Marie 1-1, beat
Windsor 6-1 as well as Compuware
(Detroit) 4-0. Saugeen advanced
with the number one seed and
subsequently beat Victory Honda
(Plymouth) 5-0 in a quarter-final
match. A 4-0 semi-final win against
Team Illinois put Saugeen Maitland
into the gold medal game where they
prevailed with a thrilling 2-1
overtime win against a strong
Aurora team.
On the offensive side, Saugeen
had 13 different players who
registered at least a point. Leading
the way were Nicole Marriage with
eight points (four goals, four
assists), Brooklyn Irwin (three
goals, four assists), Murray (one
goal, five assists), Laura Irwin (five
goals), Brittany Butcher (two goals,
three assists), Marcie Landman
(three goals, one assist), Hannah
Davidson, (two goals, two assists)
and Laken Smith (one goal, two
assists). Chipping in with assists
were Garrow (two), Sara Gossell,
Reid, McGavin and Dollee Meigs.
Earlier this month, Stellar play by
the Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning defencemen kept the
Stratford Aces off the scoreboard
and helped the Lightning to a 4-0
victory on Oct. 19.
Goaltender Sluys picked up her
second consecutive shutout by
stopping all 19 Stratford shots.
Leading the team with scoring was
the line of Smith and Butcher each
with one goal and two assist, while
linemate, L. Irwin chipped in a goal
and an assist. Also picking up a
shorthanded goal was rookie, B.
Irwin.
Steady defenceman, McGavin,
contributed with an assist with a nice
shot from the point.

PeeWee Lightning take
gold at Cobourg tourney
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
Lightning had four good games
over the Oct. 9-10 weekend playing
in the Ribbon of Hope tournament
in Cobourg and came back with
gold medals.
The girls came up against
Belleville and won with a score of
5-0 and then defeated Cobourg by a
score of 7-0 with another shutout
for Cassidy Becker. With the team
still on a roll, they played Brampton
who had some good skaters to give
the Lightning a workout but in the
end it was a strong win. The goalie,
Monica Rankin, gave up one goal.
Saugeen now moved into finals
with Brampton, but it was a
different game. Saugeen was only
able to get three past the goalie but
none got by Becker. The mighty
team goals were scored by Kaitlin
Eckert, Avery Reeves, Neve Van
Pelt, Jessica Dales, Abby Atkins of
Gorrie, Amy Hepburn, Brie Becker,
Hanna Herman and Melanie Nolan
and Delayna Smith, both of
Brussels.
Other teammates who helped in a
sweet victory were Kayla McCabe
and Olivia Licklighter. Great
goaltending was received by
Cassidy Becker and Monica
Rankin.
The coach is Aron VanPelt, who
also won best dressed coach. As the
tournament was raising money for
breast cancer, there was lots of pink
power for this team over the
weekend.
