Brussels Atoms win three, drop Mitchell game 13-1
The Brussels Atom Bulls
welcomed the Mitchell Meteors on
Oct. 29, but were unable to coninue
their three game winning streak.
Mitchell beat the Bulls 13-1.
On Oct. 25, the Brussels Atom
Bulls were on the road in Monkton
to take on the Elma-Logan Wildcats
winning by a score of 6-1.
Jarron Thompson was outstanding
in net as Elma-Logan applied all
sorts of pressure in the first period
but both the Bulls and Wildcats
could not get on the board. The Bulls
opened the scoring when Jack Pipe
scored, assisted by Ted Jacklin. A
minute and a half later the Bulls
went up 2-0 when Noah Terpstra
scored assisted by Hudson Smith.
Nick McArter made it a 3-0 game
when he scored after banging in a
rebound on Avery McArter’s shot
from the point.
The third period saw Brussels
increase the lead when Pipe broke
through the defence and then flipped
a puck over the Elma-Logan goalie,
scoring just 58 seconds in, and then
Pipe again, when he converted a nice
passing play from N. McArter and
Smith. Brett Stevenson then scored
unassisted to complete the scoring
for Brussels.
Thompson was 33.3 seconds away
from a shutout when the Wildcats
finally solved him after a scramble
which resulted in the only tally for
Elma-Logan. The Atom Bulls have
put in some great effort and hard
work this past weekend which has
allowed them to get two wins on the
road against three good teams.
On Oct. 23 the Bulls headed for
Goderich to take on the Sailors at the
Maitland Recreation Centre in an
afternoon affair. This game was
exciting from the drop of the puck,
ending with a score of 5-2 in favour
of Brussels.
N. McArter had the backstop
duties for this one and matched stop
for stop with his counterpart from
Goderich. Both goalies managed to
keep the game scoreless through two
periods.
The third period was a different
story, as both teams put the puck in
the net. Just 24 seconds into the third
period, Goderich put the first goal in,
but 17 seconds later Pipe scored
unassisted to tie the game at one.
The Sailors took the lead again in the
third but once again the Bulls tied
the score when Terpstra put the puck
by the Goderich Goalie to knot the
game at two.
With great end-to-end action it
was the Bulls that continued the
scoring when Nolan Johnston broke
the tie unassisted and then the Bulls
would never look back as Smith
scored, assisted by Brent Alexander
and then Terpstra added an empty-
net goal as Goderich had pulled their
goalie for an extra attacker making
the final score 5-2 for the Atom
Bulls.
The Bulls showed great intensity
which allowed them to skate away
with a well-earned road win.
On Oct. 22, the Listowel Cyclones
came to town for the Bull’s second
home game and start of three games
in four days resulting in a 4-3 win
for Brussels. The Bulls got on the
board first with Nolan Johnston
scoring assisted by Pipe. At the 5:44
mark, the Bulls took a 2-0 lead when
A. McArter scored with an assist
going to Pipe. Listowel came within
one by the end of the first period
after a late goal.
The second period saw Brussels
increase the lead when Terpstra
scored assisted by Smith. Listowel
was unable to put a goal past
Thompson who was solid in net for
the Bulls until late in the third
period, but that was after Terpstra
got his second of the game assisted
by Stevenson and Johnston. This
made the final score 4-3 in favour of
the Bulls to make their home record
perfect thus far in their young
season.

A big win

slim margin, taking home a 1-0 victory. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Blyth Bantams shut-out Drayton
Defenders 10-0 in home game
The Drayton Defenders came to
The Dog Pound on Oct. 25 and got
stoned by Blyth’s hot goalie Dalton
(Eddie) Carey.
After sitting out the last game,
Matt VanWyk was on a mission,
scoring twice in the opening period.
Assisting on Matt’s goals were his
brother Mike, and Wyatt Carey.
Not wanting to be outdone both
Arden Coultes and Robbie Gordon
each put a puck by Drayton’s goalie
as well. Gordon had the assist on
one, A. Coultes’s goal, and Dustin
Pennington assisted on both. So the
first period ended with Blyth up by
four unanswered goals.
In the second period, the Blyth
boys took a number of penalties, five
to be exact.
Spencer Stevenson stepped up to
get Blyth back on the correct path
scoring the first goal of the second
with assists going to Mike VanWyck
and Dallas Coultes. Not to be
outdone by his brother, Matt got two
pucks by the Drayton goalie,
assisting on one was Spencer.
Finishing out the second period,
Carey was able to bury one thanks to
a great pass from Matt VanWyck. At
the end of the second period Blyth
was up 8-0.
Between the second and third the
ice cleaner was out, so the boys were
in the dressing room for the big pep
talk from coach Scott Stevenson,
likely short and sweet.
So back to the ice for the final
fifteen minutes of play and Drayton
was starting to show frustration as
they had four trips to the penalty
box. Matt VanWyck was able to get
that hattrick with a nifty pass from
Carey.
It seems what goes around comes
around as Carey buried his
second puck of the game on a pass
from, you guessed it Matt Van
Wyck.
The final buzzer came with Blyth
winning 10-0 and Carey earning his
first shut out of the season.
A quick thanks goes out to Sharon
Westburg, who made her season
debut as the team trainer when
required.
Blyth Midgets continue win streak
with big wins in Ripley, Drayton
The Blyth Midget Rep Bulldogs
put two in the win column as they
visited Clifford and Ripley on Oct.
24 and 25.
The Bulldogs beat Ripley 2-1 and
Clifford 16-1, bringing their season
to a perfect three wins and no losses.
Things would get heated up in the
second, with both teams warming the
penalty box. Ripley would be the first
to hit the twine at 8:09 in the second.
Blyth would tie things up with 2:10
left in the same period. Shea McLean
would put Blyth on the scoreboard
with assists by Matt Chalmers and
Matt Popp.
The second would end in a 1-1 tie.
After the flood, tempers cooled
down, but that didn’t stop the big
hits.
Blyth would stay out of the box for
the remainder of the game however,
the opponents were not as lucky.
During a Ripley penalty, Blyth
scored at 6:51 of the third again by
McLean. Assists went to Chalmers
and John Lecomte.
Ripley would continue to apply
pressure on Blyth right to the end of
the game.
Goalie, Ryan Baker was strong in
the net for Blyth.
On Sunday, Oct. 24, the Blyth
Midget Rep Bulldogs travelled to
Clifford for their season opener.
This squad of players from both
Blyth and Brussels applied pressure
in the Clifford end right from the
initial face off.
With 5:06 left in the first, Clifford
was first on the scoreboard.
With three minutes left in the first,
Blyth would even it up.
Jeremy Ross would score the first
goal of the season, with assists to
Adam Cousins and Matt Popp.
Blyth never eased up on the
pressure.
Ten more goals were scored in the
second with another five in the
third.
Clifford fought hard the entire
game, but they were no match for the
team. Scoring in the second and third
periods were Austin Sjaarda,
Lecomte (4), Chalmers (2) Ross (2),
Aaron Popp (2), McLean (2), Kirby
Cook and Jacob McGavin.
Assists went to Ross, McGavin (2),
Chalmers (4), Lecomte (3), McLean
(3), M. Popp (3), Adam Cronin (2),
Cook and Kody Higgins.
