It seems there will be many new faces around the tables in municipal council chambers across Ontario come December. One riding in our immediate area didn’t return a single councillor to a council position. Apparently voters everywhere were upset with the performance of councils for the past term(s). Will a new broom sweep clean – as the expression goes? Only time will tell. Will electors have learned their lesson and keep a closer eye on their municipal councils in the future or will they slip back into complacency? Again, only time will tell. Voters turned out in record numbers in most areas. I would like to congratulate voters in the East Ward or Hullett Township of the municipality for the record turnout we recorded on Oct. 25. Turnout in the East Ward was approximately 45 per cent. Being busy and sharing small talk that day made the hours go much faster. There are always glitches. In the age of computers it is inconceivable how the names of some longtime residents fail to make the voters list but it happens. Frankly, it is the responsibility of individual voters to make sure their names are on that list. In most cases the omission is easily corrected. This was the first year voters were required to show identification to personnel at the polling station. In small communities such as ours it may seem ridiculous. However workers are only following the rules set down for municipalities across Ontario. Workers in larger centres would have much difficulty with identification. And it clearly stated on the voter cards we all receivedthat photo identification would berequired. It will be interesting to learn howthe municipalities around who choseto do mail-in voting felt thatexperiment went. Could be that Central Huron will do the next election differently. Former Londesborough residents, Bill and Irene Bromley have had a busy few weeks. They sold their home in Londesborough in early summer, long before their new home at Meneset Park would be ready. They lived for some weeks in their camper parked at the Saltford home of their daughter, Lorie Pullen. On Sept. 1, they moved into their new home. In mid-September Bill and Irene and Irene’s brother and sister-in law, Cal and Joanne (Middegaal) Garrow left on a trip they had planned for many months leaving many boxes still unpacked. The two couples flew to Amsterdam and stayed four days in Holland. They visited Joanne’s home farm in Uskel where they were graciously welcomed by the present owner and neighbours. Irene reports they spent the morning visiting and sharing many stories and memories. It was quite overwhelming for Joanne. Following their time in Amsterdam, the foursome took a cruise of the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers. They enjoyed many excursions through the beautiful countryside and historical communities of Germany and Austria. The travellers were amazed at how passionately and proudly those countries display their history and constantly refurbish their historical buildings. Irene notes that the couples were fortunate to attend a wonderful concert in Vienna on their last night. It became just another of the many memorable experiences they shared. Margaret Wright would like to remind members of Londesborough United Church that it is renewal time for The Observer magazine. New subscriptions are also welcome. The UCW will cater and extra persons Beautiful music A mass choir comprised of dozens of members, past and present, of the Londesborough United Church were practising for their big performance on Oct. 24 for the church’s 150th anniversary service just before the service later that morning.
