PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2010.
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The month of October ended with
a very busy few days. The Thursday
night dart league started last week
with 13 darters taking aim at the
boards. The night is open to anyone
who wants to come out just for fun
for only a buck. Names are drawn
for partners and the night begins at
8 p.m. There are darts available for
anyone to use and you don’t have to
be Legion members and you can
come whenever you’re able.
Winners for the first week are:
Glenn Zehr and Sandra Josling, first
place; second, Gord Jacklin and
Greta Zehr; high shot, Sharen
Robbins, 111; first skunk of the
year, team of Jacklin and Zehr.
The Friday night supper of ham
and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed
by a good crowd of about 40. The
donations to the food bank were
good and we appreciate everyone
bringing along an item for the food
bank. The program continues
weekly and the donations will be
taken to the North Huron Food
bank. This week supper will be
chicken breast.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had eight and half tables of players.
Winners were: first place, Hazel
McGonigle and Helen Nicholson,
80 points; second, Rus and Jim, 75;
third, Viola and Ruth and John
and Charlie, tied with 70;
lone hands, Eileen Sloan and
Stewart R.; low prize, Bill and Dini
Well, the ghosties are gone for
another year. Halloween was a
beautiful evening for the dress-up
gang.
At this house, we seem to get
regulars, and it’s nice seeing how
their costumes change over the
years as they grow. As usual, the
beauties were all polite and fun to
have drop in.
Hurrah! The traffic light in the
north end of the village is gone and
we’re back to unimpeded traffic.
The new bridge is complete, the
pavement is smooth and the
sidewalks are great. Good work
guys over the last few months, and
we’re really glad you’re finished.
A quiet celebration was held at
the Mennonite Fellowship last
Thursday evening. The 5R’s
Community Thrift Shop celebrated
19 years of business in Brussels.
Another annual meeting to hear the
news that we’re okay for another
year. Like any business, we run very
close to the line, keeping prices low
while paying rent, utilities and
wages. So here we go into our 20th
year in the balancing act. A
volunteer board of directors
oversees the store in three-year
terms. I was pleased to see Linda
Garland back on the board as she
was one of the seven original board
members that started 5R’s in ’91. It
seemed very appropriate that Linda
would be there to help celebrate the
20th year.
Reviewing the financial
statements at the meeting was no
surprise, but the cost of bag tags and
bank charges are the items that do
cause your head to shake. I guess
that’s the price of doing business.
The nice weather on Saturday had
everyone out and about. A good
crowd was busy checking out the
new store on Turnberry, just in time
for hunting season. Good luck Mike
Smith with your new endeavour, the
Rack and Roost Hunting Store. It
looks good.
I even got the bulbs planted on
Saturday. It’s one of those jobs that
just wasn’t happening. The warm
breeze got me going. As each
grandchild comes into our lives we
plant a bunch of tulips in the garden.
Here’s November, a quiet month
to contemplate the lives of our
service people and how so many
lives have been affected by the
unrest in our world. After the
service at the Cenotaph this year,
the Legion leads the parade to the
United Church for the continuation
of the morning service. As we join
together next Thursday, it’s another
time to think and be thankful for our
life as Canadians.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Thank you for the support shown as Mayor of Huron East and the
continued support as your councillor for the Brussels Ward. I
have enjoyed serving as your mayor, meeting new people and
seeing the world from a different angle. We truly live in the best
part of Huron County.
I want you to know that my door is open or my phone at
519-887-6289 is always available for input. If I can ever deliver
anything to Seaforth Town Hall on your behalf, please call as I still
go there quite regularly.
The new council is to be installed by December 1, 2010.
