Local students recognized with awards at MadillLocal students were recognizedfor their academic prowess at F.E.Madill Secondary School’sCommencement ceremony on Oct.22.Heather Hill and Tom Johnstonreceived the Menzies Endowment Fund Awards which are presented to applicants who are graduates ofBrussels Public School and have thehighest averages in 11 seniorcourses that meet diploma and postsecondary admission requirements. Justin Pipe received the BrusselsCommunity Development Trust Scholarship which is awarded to a graduate of Brussels Public Schoolwho exhibited good citizenshipwhile a student at Madill and hasproceeded to further education in thetechnical field, either as anapprentice or at college.Eachunn Blaney received the English (for the ENG4E class) Subject Proficiency Award. Andrew Watson received Subject Proficiency Awards for his success in Advanced Functions, Excercise Science and French. He also received a Madill Student Council Award, which is given to graduating students who have given back to the student body through participation in the three prongs of the Big M – academics, athletics and activities. Watson was given his Big M Senior letter, recognizing that he earned either three intermediate awards for Academics, Athletics and Activities, or has earned two awards, one with double the points needed. He was also an Ontario Scholar. Ursina Studhalter received the Fashion Subject Proficiency Award. She also received the Huron County Award, given to a student who resides in the county and is proceeding to further education in anagricultural or related field and theWest Wawanosh Mutual InsuranceAward which recognizes a graduatewho is furthering their education inagriculture or related fields.Studhalter also received her Big M Senior Letter, the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship and was an Ontario Scholar. Andrew Lindsay received the Computer and Information Science Subject Proficiency Award. Lindsay also received the Jean McEwen Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to deserving, graduating applicants from Huron County who are furthering their education at a post secondary institution. Lindsay was an Ontario Scholar. Travis Roetcisoender received the College and Apprenticeship Mathematics Subject Proficiency Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement to students proceeding to an Ontario college or University. Roetcisoender was an Ontario Scholar. The Subject Proficiency Award for Chemistry (for the SCH4C class)was given to Ellen Cook, who alsoreceived her Big M Senior letter. Ben Rouw received the SubjectProficiency Award for Physics (forthe SPH4C Class).Ben Gowing was awarded the Subject Proficiency Award for Technological Design. Gowing also received the B.M. Ross Award, which is presented to students who are enrolled in an engineering program at an accredited Canadian university. He also received his Big M Senior letter, the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship, and was an Ontario Scholar. Josh Wesselink received the Subject Proficiency Award for Transportation Technology. Alicia Appleby was presented with the ABCD award in memory of Mr John Madill as a student who went above and beyond the call of duty. She also received the Madill Student Trustee/Senator award, earned a Big M award and was an Ontario Scholar. The Garniss Family Award recognizing a resident of the GRANT SNELL Mr. Grant Snell of Clinton, and formerly of Hullett Township passed away peacefully at Clinton Public Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010. He was in his 98th year. Grant was born in Hullett Township on June 14, 1913 and was the beloved son of the late William Snell and the late Maude (Jenkins) Snell. Grant farmed in Hullett Township all his life, retiring at the age of 90. He was a member of the Clinton United Church. He was the dear brother of Ruth Keys of London and he is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Laura Forbes, Norma Boyce and Marian Langmaid and by one brother, Harry Snell. Friends were received at the Falconer Funeral Homes Ltd., Clinton Chapel, 153 High Street, Clinton on Saturday, Oct. 16 from noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Rev. Leslie Searles of the Clinton United Church officiated. Interment was in Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Aaron Boyce, Murray Keys, Graham Langmaid, Harris Snell, Ken McDougall and John Johnston. Donations to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
