(Letters of John Newton) “By the grace of God I am what I am!” 1 Corinthians 15:10 The true Christian is sensible and mindful of indwelling sin. He confesses that in everything he comes exceedingly short, and that his best services are not only defective — but defiled. He accounts himself as an unprofitable servant — and is abased in his own eyes. He knows that all that distinguishes him from the vilest of men — is the free grace of God! He derives all his hope and comfort, as well as his strength — from Jesus, whom he has known, received and loved, and to whom he has committed his soul. He renounces all confidence in the flesh, and esteems all things as loss — compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus Christ his Lord, for whose sake he has lost all things — considering them rubbish, that he may gain Christ! Ushering were Arletta Hallahan, Hope Button, Nicole Kerr and Lori Brooks. Bryce Glousher lit the candles at the front of the church. The prelude was in care of Floyd Herman at the piano and Cappy Onn, playing the violin. Lorna Fraser welcomed everyone to church, both past and present members on this special day. The Sunday School was celebrating 50 years to open the time capsule. Brett Glousher drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin. Special attention was to the UCW meeting on Thursday, Oct. 28 in the church parlour at 2 p.m. The pots of mums at the front were placed in memory of Mervin and Margaret Govier by their children Joan McDougall, Murray Govier and Carol Gross. Margaret Govier was the last funeral in the old church and Mervin Govier was the first funeral service held in the new church. The first scripture from Luke 18: 15 was acted as a skit with the children coming to Jesus. The children continued to take their place at the front of the churchinstead of the choir. The call to worship was followedby Logan Chalmers reading thescripture from Matthew 18: 1-5. The first hymn, “Jesus Bids Us Shine” was sung from the hymn book Voices United instead of the power point, as it was not used in 1960. Karen Glousher and Deb Hakkers read an account of the Foster Children the Sunday School had supported through the 50 years, the first one in 1963 and up to present day. The children sang the anthem, “Arky Arky”. Steven Sparling was asked to speak on the history of the past 50 years, from the Sunday School teachers meetings that were held in the homes of the teachers with refreshments served by the host to present day. He read some parts of the minutes taken at these meetings and of the planning for different events that involved the Sunday School children. There have been many changes in the 50 years. The Sunday School has gone from 150 to 15 students but is still growing. Ally Glousher read the children’s prayer. Three verses of the hymn, “Dance, Dance” were sung followed by the receiving of the offering. Cappy Onn and her children Gideon and Gulliver favoured the congregation with a number played on their violins while the offering was being received. The time capsule was opened after a very difficult time. In the time capsulewas a picture of the 1960 SundaySchool, Sunday school papers, treasurer’s report and the surprisewas that there was book from 1910 Sunday School. So they were not only celebrating 50 years but also 100 years. Former superintendents Judy (Brown) Gleave and Albert Wasson shared their memories of the past. Albert reminded everyone to ask the person if they didn’t remember their name. The 2010 Sunday School led the congregation in saying The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn, “Jesus Loves Me” was sung. Donna Moore, a former superintendent, was asked to say Grace and everyone was invited downstairs for lunch. Before lunch everyone was asked to go outside and stand in front of the church for a group picture to be put in the next time capsule. Everyone enjoyed the 1960s lunch with sandwiches made of coloured bread. Sandwich loaves were made and checkerboard and pinwheel sandwiches decorated thetrays.
