HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-10-28, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2010.By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe month is flying by and thereare less than two weeks to drop in
and pay your dues to get in on the
early-bird draw for October.
September’s happy Comrade was
Catrina Josling who has won her
2012 dues. Who will be the next
happy Comrade? This is also a great
time to join the Legion. Come in
today or call Comrade Greg Wilson
about joining.
Events coming up include the
poppy canvas on Saturday, Oct. 30.
Comrades are needed for canvassing
and for driving the Cadet volunteers
around town and to the outside
villages. Please be at the Branch at 9
a.m. if you can lend a couple of
hours of your time for the poppy
canvas. Everyone can show their
support of remembrance for the
thousands of Canadians who gave
the ultimate sacrifice of life by
wearing a poppy. Donations are
gratefully accepted, but regardless
you will receive a poppy.
The craft show and sale will kick
off in November and it will be only
on the Saturday this year. Come out
and see what’s new and enjoy a soupand sandwich lunch. Lunch will beavailable from 11:30 a.m. until 1
p.m. Admission is free but we
encourage everyone to bring along
an item for the food bank.
Gather up your lucky rabbit’s foot
and join the bus trip to Brantford
Casino on Nov. 17. Drop into the
branch and sign up for the day away.
There is room for quite a few, but
don’t wait until the last minute and
be disappointed. We will be offering
the extra seats to the Seaforth Legion
after Oct. 30, so call today to the
Branch or Wanda at 519-887-8465.
The sports events for Comrades
are starting, so drop into the Branch.
Mixed team darts are on Oct. 30 in
Clinton and cribbage will be Nov. 13
in Hensall. Sign-up sheets are on the
board.
Mixed blind darts begin this week,
Oct. 28. The Thursday-night darts
begin at 8 p.m. and teams are drawn
when everyone arrives. A night of
fun for just a buck. You do not have
to belong to the Legion to come out
and enjoy the night.
Welcome back to Sandra Josling
who has enjoyed a week of holidays. Our get-well wishes go out to Ken
Graber who is in hospital at this
time. We are pleased to report that
Comrade Helen Dobson is
progressing well and Comrade Cecil
Moore is also doing very well.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by nearly 40 folk.
This week will be ham and scalloped
potatoes. More donations for the
food bank were brought in and we
encourage everyone to bring along a
food item. The food banks in the
area are being used by a many
families. Since 2006, the client base
has gone from 884 families to over
2,700 families, obviously a growingneed for the services of the foodbank.
The yearly veterans’ banquet was
held in Wingham this year. There
was a combined total of 10 veterans
and spouses or caregivers sponsored
by the Brussels Branch. The
afternoon included entertainment
and then a delicious roast beef
dinner. The Branch had Comrades
Ross and Marg Bennett, George and
Maxine Adams, Cecil Moore and
Mrs. McGowan, Forrest Whittard
and Olave Papple and Glenn and
Jean Bridge. They enjoyed their day
away and the hospitality of the
Wingham Branch.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
As I write this, the polls are not yet
open, but already many are thinking
about the outcomes.
Anyone who puts their name on
the ballot has the interest of the
community at heart, and only when
they sit at the table with other
community-minded folk will the real
story be told. Each one comes
with ideas which will be tempered
and balanced by the others who
won their seat at the table. To
everyone whose name was on the
ballot, thank you for your
willingness to serve.
The north end of the village was a
busy spot as McDonald Home
Hardware and Lumber held their
open house for their new warehouse
on Saturday. The people came to see
the new building, as well as the
technology of the solar energy
installed by KW PowerLogic (Gerry
Wheeler and Bill King) found in the
roof. A building opening is a
celebration of all the trades that
came together for a successful
completion so a good celebration it
was, as staff, workers and customers
mingled. Food, new products,
friendly staff, clowns and
face painting made for a successful
day.
Gloria Wilbee was the worship
leader at Brussels United on Sunday,
sharing her thoughts and music with
the congregation. Sandra Cable was
in Cranbrook celebrating the church
anniversary there.
The lesson for this weekend with
Jordan, Robyn and Jill was patience.
I’ve been feeding the bluejays
unshelled peanuts in the front
flowerbed and front steps this year.
The Listowel Grandgirls decided to
see if we could get them to come to
the step while we were watching
from the chairs and doorstep. After
many peanuts, much giggling and
maneouvering and with cameras in
hand we have several bluejays (on
film) on the porch selecting their
treat.
It was hard not to laugh out loud as
they picked up one, then another,
only to drop it for a third nut that I
guess must have been a better
choice. One greedy one tried several
times to carry two away. We had at
least six jays coming and going,
stopping at different spots on the
sidewalk and porch as they got their
breakfast. What fun! Who says it
takes a lot to entertain children
today?
The Halloween decorations are up
and ready for the ghosts and goblins
to visit next week. Enjoy the fun.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
