The Citizen, 2010-10-21, Page 33THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2010. PAGE 33.Continued from page 1businesses.Seili said that he chose to stepdown from the mayoral race becauseof other commitments, but that he still wanted to be involved with the municipality. He listed the accomplishments of council under his watch, including the Huron East Health Centre in Seaforth and said that one of the biggest challenges going forward will be the provincial government “ramming stuff down our throats”. “We have to stand up and fight for our community,” Seili said. “We’re not second-class citizens and we need to make school boards and the province accountable for their actions”. Walton’s Chris Lee, candidate for deputy-mayor, said that there is much more to him than motocross, which he acknowledges is what many people in the area know him for. He has worked extensively with the Huron Business Development Corporation and Huron County in small business development and says that will help him, should he be elected. He also cited his work withthe Huron community Family HealthTeam and the Gateway Rural HealthResearch Institute. He said he was interested in running for the deputy-mayor position because of the “middle ground” that it would afford him. He would be able to be in a position where he could oversee the council, but he would also be in a place where he could express his opinion, something the mayor is unable to do during the discussion of an issue. His competition, current Seaforth Councillor Joe Steffler, says he has experience with all of Huron East. He was born in Grey, lived in Walton for a long time and now makes his home in Seaforth. Steffler said the three issues he sees as major going forward are the declining population in rural Ontario, the closure of Brussels Public School and the Brussels Library. Mayoral candidate Bernie MacLellan said that while ratepayers may be concerned in his opinions, it’s his job to run the meetings, govern over council and ensure thateveryone has their say, but when itcomes to issues, the mayor doesn’tvote. MacLellan said he will do hisbest to uphold and defend council’s decisions after they have been made and to be a voice to the press and the public, as well as to Huron County Council. MacLellan’s competition, Paul VanderMolen said that he believes the mayor should be out in the community as much as possible, hearing the concerns of the citizens. “I’m creative and enthusiastic,” VanderMolen said. “And I like to be involved.” The question period was opened by a question for the four mayoral and deputy-mayoral candidates asking what strengths they believe they would bring to Huron County Council. MacLellan said that he already has years of experience with Huron County Council and that he knows how it works in Goderich. He said the downloading of bridges to the municipality has been tough, but that he feels he has worked out a way that the costs canbe spread out over the next 16 years.Lee said he plans on listening a lotand talking a little, at least for thefirst little while as he learns the ropes. He cited his self-employment as an asset, knowing how to network and negotiate, which he feels will help him at the Huron County Council table. The issue of the Brussels Library was raised once again and Blaney said that he wants to do what the people want to do. Stretton said he is open to looking at anything, but that a viable option would be to save the Carnegie building, while linking a new library with renovation and expansion at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, which would result in improved recreation facilities and increased usage at the library (as a similar experiment had done in Howick). Seili said he would have liked to see the new library built a year ago. Pam McLellan, who is running for a trustee position on the Avon Maitland District School Board, was asked about further school closuresin Huron East, which she said shewould not support. She said thatunfortunately the “deck is stacked”against Huron County, with Perth County having five members on the board, while Huron County only has four members, but that she would not vote for another closure in Huron County, but especially in Huron East. Incumbent board trustee Wilhelmina Laurie said that Huron East should be able to breathe easy and that there should be no more closures in the area in the foreseeable future. Robert Hunking, who is also running for the board’s local trustee position, said that funding continues to be a big problem for the school board. He said that he would not necessarily be against closing another school in the area and that he would vote for it if it was the best situation for the board. Hunking, however, did say that he wants more transparency in the Accommodation Review process, which he felt was missing in Blyth.
