The work crews have finished the
new sidewalks on the west side of
Turnberry Street and they look great.
They did a wonderful job and were
very helpful in aiding the business
people to incur very little disruption
of doing business. Fast, efficient and
done in a week!
Welcome home to Gordon
Mitchell after enjoying a working
holiday in the west. Gord travelled to
Kelfield, Saskatchewan to stay with
relatives and help with the harvest.
The three families of cousins he was
helping were over 6,500 acres
behind in their wheat and lentil
harvest because of the wet weather.
The cousins had four combines
among them and were teased they
were being spoiled having their own
mechanic on site. Gord reports that
he enjoyed lots of work and a little
visiting. He says that moles and
mole hills, not little ones, are quite a
problem in the area and the farmers
have quite a time keeping them
under control. He says it is quite
something to sit at the end of the
field and see the crop growing as far
as the eye could see. Gord also
reports that the leaves have already
fallen from the trees and was
surprised on his return that our trees
still have so many. Gord really
enjoyed his “working “ holiday and
on his return is now helping combine
the corn crop.
Our condolences to Joe Smith on
the passing of wife Bev. Our
sympathies are given to their
children, Janice, Brad, Cheryl,
Heather and Kevin and their
families. Joe and Bev lived and
raised their family around the
Brussels area until moving to
Listowel a few years ago.
Our get-well wishes go out to
Brian Schlosser who was in an
accident with his motorcycle. He
spent a couple of days in hospital
and we hope he is on the road to
recovery.
Our get-well wishes go to Jake
Bromley, son of Scott and Colleen
Bromley. The little tot suffered a
“green stick” break of the arm. We
hope he heals quickly.
Our speedy recovery wishes go
out to young Griffin Marshall, son of
Nick and Kelly Marshall, who
suffered a broken leg playing hockey
on the weekend.
Congratulations to Elsie Shaw on
celebrating her 99th birthday.
Members of her family joined her at
Fordwich Nursing Home for a cake
and ice cream party. Elsie has five
children including Jim, Jack,
Harvey, Dorothy and Edith.
Congratulations to Rob and Amy
Burkholder on the birth of a
daughter, Emily. Great-grand-
mother, Anne Elliott, reports she is a
wee sweetheart. Excited grand
parents are Bob and Deb Thomas
and Rob and Kathy Burkholder.
Returning from a six-week
travelling holiday are Larry and
Barb Rose. Joining them on their trip
was Barb’s sister and husband from
Meaford. They went by motorhome
and headed west first to visit with
relatives in Calgary. They spent a
week visiting and sightseeing before
moving on to British Columbia. The
next two weeks were spent with
Barb’s other sister and husband and
catching up with more family. They
attended a big family barbecue and
saw many of their extended family
members. The three couples then
headed off through the U.S. and toLas Vegas and Laughlin. The weekthey spent in that area had themspending some time in the casinoswhere they lost a little and won alittle and had some fun. Theirjourney headed them towardsMexico, but they needed a specialpass to cross the border, so didn’tbother. They took pictures of the
activity across the border, saw the
armed border guards and thought
that was good enough.
A highlight of the trip was touring
to the out of the way, small town
where John Wayne is buried. They
went to the cemetery and saw the
many huge monuments and
tombstones. It was also very, very
hot while they were there, over 100
degrees most every day. They
headed for California and were
impressed with the huge redwood
trees. It was soon time to head home
and the couple from B.C. headed
their way and the Ontario foursome
started home. They had a marvelous
time and stayed at many great parks,
saw many great sights and enjoyed
each others’ company for a
wonderful six weeks. Welcome
home!
Neil and Marie McGavin have
returned from a short visit to North
Bay with daughter Heather and
family. They went up to have a
special time with the two older
children, Jared and Jessica, who will
celebrate their birthdays in the next
week. They went out to dinner
together and had a fun time in the
couple of days they were away.
The municipal election is just
around the corner and there havebeen many meetings for people toattend. The headline on the radionews following the meeting inBrussels on Tuesday evening was acomment by Joe Steffler. Joe madethe comment that the population inHuron East is steadily decreasing. Itmade me think back to when I firstcame to live on the 16th of Grey. My
memory recalls that about 43
children would have lived from our
corner to the corner of Lot 15. The
years have seen the families grown,
moved away, retired, children have
taken over the family farm and
started families of their own. Today,
there are about 20 young people on
the line They are of various sizes-
babies, school age and some have
gone off to college and university. It
is a fact of today’s times; smaller
families and the decreasing
population of Huron East.
Returning from a five-day visit to
Las Vegas are Jim and Linda
McDonald. They report it was hot,
but only 87-92 degrees hot, not over
the 100 as it had been when the
Roses were there. They attended
three different shows and report they
were all great. They saw David
Copperfield Illusions, the new Circ
de Soleil Tribute Elvis show. The
show is choreographed to all the
popular Elvis Presley tunes. They
also saw the Phantom of the Opera.
They report a nice trip, a great time
and fantastic shows.
It was the weekend for weddings
and a beautiful fall day it was for
them all. The wedding of Loni Horst
and Tanner Leslie was held at the

The beautiful hue ofconcord grape was the colour themeof the wedding party. Loni is thedaughter of Richard and MarjorieHorst and Tanner is the son of PattyBanks. The happy couple resides in
London. Congratulations to Tanner
and Loni.
The second wedding of the
weekend was of Derek Terpstra and
his new wife Diamond. The couple
was wed in Exeter and the dinner
and reception was held in Seaforth.
A very excited young lady on the bus
was Miss Shawna Terpstra who was
the flower girl and wore a beautiful
ivory dress. Her little brother Logan
and cousin Gabe Terpstra were the
ring bearers. Derek is the son of Joe
and Meriam Terpstra and the
newlyweds will live in the Brussels
area. Congratulations to Derek and
Diamond.
The third wedding of the weekend
was for Amanda Stevenson and
Jessica Kemp. The couple was wed
at the home of Amanda’s parents,
Bill and Carol Stevenson. A lovely
reception was held at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre. Congratulations to Amanda
and Jessica.
The fourth wedding was of Walton
neighbours Walter and Donna
Oliver’s daughter Theresa. She
married Larry Geisel at a lovely
ceremony in Kurtzville. The bride
and family had pictures taken out
front of their home on Moncrieff Rd.
and as we drove by, thought they
might be a little cool. It was
confirmed that they were, but the
beautiful sunny day made it fine.
The dinner and reception was held in
Kurtzville in a lovely setting of black
and red. The newlyweds will be
residing near Palmerston.
Congratulations to Theresa and
Larry.
A surprise birthday party was held
for Rob Little at the Walton Hall on
the weekend. The party was
arranged by Rob’s children and was
attended by many extended family
and friends around the area. The
number 50 was mentioned a few
times as the mystery age of the
birthday boy. Happy birthday Rob.
Belated congratulations to Jared
and Val Dalton on the birth of a son,
MacKenzie. Happy big sisters are
Braelyn and Sydney and happy
grandparents are Don and Pat
Dalton.
Returning from 10 days away
moose hunting are Lloyd Glanville,
Brussels, Les Glanville, Walton and
Roy Glanville, Rostock. They joined
seven other men including Steve
Stevenson to travel to the fields area
to hunt. They report they saw moose
but no one was able to shoot a
moose.
It was a really great show of the
wonderful songs of the 50s and 60s
performed by Marie Bottrell in the
tribute to Patsy Cline in Blyth on
Sunday. She sang many of the well-
known songs like “Walkin After
Midnight”, “Crazy” and “She’s Got
You” and did a fantastic job.
There were over 35 Walton and
Brussels area folks in the audience to
enjoy the show that I saw, but too
many to names to mention this time.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Brian Love, Rob
Little, Jim McDonald, Dianne
Bennett, Maxine Marks, Owen
Taylor, Randy Fraser, Sarah
Grobbink, Jessica Kelso, Mary
Helen McLachan, Adam Bauer,
Bryan Kelso, Clyde McClure and

all.
