MUNICIPAL ELECTION 2010
CHRIS LEE
Walton’s Chris Lee is running for the position of deputy-mayor in the Municipality of Huron
East.
While Lee has no previous political experience, he has served on the Huron Stewardship
Committee, partnerships with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, the board of
directors for the Huron Business Development Corporation, the Huron East Economic
Development Committee, the Huron community Family Health Team, the Gateway Rural
Health Research Institute and the Huron Tourism Association. He says he has also had extensive
experience in working with elected officials at the municipal and county-wide levels.
Lee decided to run because he says he believes in giving back to the community and that by participating, people
earn the governance that they deserve. He also says he feels that no position should ever be acclaimed.
Lee says with significant issues facing the community and polarizing its residents, the deputy-mayor can play an
important role to reconcile differences as the community moves forward towards a resolution.
The most important issue for Huron East Lee says, is social vitality. He says that the area’s leadership needs to
believe in the area’s collective potential. He says that energy in debate on such issues will drive the solutions ahead
in solving issues like debilitating public health statistics and replenishing the population.
Lee’s personal goal is to know that he has done all he can to make Huron East a community where his
grandchildren can stay, grow and realize their greatest potential by the end of his term.
ORVAL BAUER
Incumbent Grey Ward Councillor for Huron East,
Orval Bauer is seeking a council seat once again.
Bauer has spent the past four years on Huron East
Council and now feels he has the experience to move
forward for another term.
Bauer says that while Huron East has seen some
downturn as a result of the global recession, he plans on
working on the local economy and community
betterment.
He is concerned with wind turbines, as well as healthcare. He says that
healthcare needs to be provided in the area for residents young and old. The
young family needs to be able to raise a family in Huron East in a healthy
way, he says, and older people need to be taken care of when they need help
as well.
He says that infrastructure needs to be looked at very closely in the future
and that the replacement of old buildings should come first. Accessibility is
a priority throughout as well as new regulations come down.
As a curler, Bauer says he knows that recreation is important in Huron
East and aims to keep it that way. He also hopes to continue several
economic development projects that began during his previous term.
JOE STEFFLER
Current Seaforth Ward Councillor Joe Steffler is running for the position of deputy-mayor in
the Municipality of Huron East.
Steffler has served for seven years, the last two terms as Seaforth Ward Councillor in Huron
East. He has also served as an elected commissioner on the Seaforth PUC from 1990 to 2002
at which time Seaforth PUC was sold to Festival Hydro in Stratford. Prior to retirement, Steffler
served on the Board of Ontario Road Supervisors Association and he served for six years on the
Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Steffler says that he believes he has been a strong member of Huron East Council for the past
seven years and that he takes the concerns of Huron East ratepayers very seriously.
Steffler says the survival of rural Ontario is the most important issue going forward. He says the dwindling rural
population needs to be addressed while at the same time dealing with the downloading of services from the federal
and provincial governments.
Another issue is the Green Energy Act, which was passed in 2009. Steffler says that more work needs to be done
on the act and that the effects need to be based on how they will relate to Huron East.
Steffler says his personal goal is to serve the people of Huron East in a fair, honest and professional manner and
represent the Huron East taxpayer at Huron County Council in the exact same manner.
ALVIN MCLELLAN
Long-time incumbent Grey Councillor Alvin McLellan is seeking to retain his council seat in
the Grey Ward of Huron East.
McLellan has served three terms in the Grey Ward of Huron East and three terms before that
as a councillor with Grey Twp. He has also served on the Moncrieff Hall Board, the Cranbrook
Hall Board, the Ethel Hall Board and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. In the past,
he has served as a member of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Board, the Brussels
Optimist Club and a member of the Environmental Learning Grounds committee at Grey
Central Public School.
The most important issue going forward, McLellan says, is green energy and the forthcoming Green Energy Act.
McLellan says his personal goal is to maintain a balanced budget, while supplying the services that the ratepayers
of Huron East have become accustomed to.
DALE NEWMAN
Dale Newman is taking a run at the position of Grey Ward Councillor in the Municipality of
Huron East. Newman served two terms as a councillor on Grey Twp. Council and has lived in
Grey since 1976.
Newman has also been involved with the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre for
10 years, six of those as chairman and a member of the Brussels, Morris and Grey Dental
Board. Newman has also been a member of the Brussels Lions Club, which he was president
of and eventually zone chairman of the A-9 District.
Newman says he wants to represent the Grey Ward on Huron East Council so he can get
involved in the decision-making process on issues like economic development and the growth of Huron East, which
would ensure that services are maintained throughout the municipality at an affordable tax rate. Newman also said
that he wants to make sure that taxes collected in Grey stay in Grey.
DIANNE DIEHL
Newcomer Dianne Diehl is running for the position of Grey Ward Councillor in the
Municipality of Huron East.
While she has no formal previous political experience, Diehl served on the Accommodation
Review Committee in 2003 in Grey, the Joint Needs Assessment and Search Committees for
the Brussels-Ethel Pastoral Charge and she is on the board for Ethel United Church, where she
has been the treasurer for a number of years.
Diehl says she was encouraged by her family and friends to run and she felt the time was right
for her to get involved with municipal politics.
Diehl says that while she doesn’t have a specific issue in mind, to her, the most important issues will be those that
are of a priority to Grey residents.
Her personal goal is to bring the concerns of Grey residents to Huron East Council to ensure that Grey continues
to be a great place to call home.
