THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2010.Sports The Wingham Ironmen were handed their first defeat of the Western Junior C Hockey League season on Saturday evening. After scoring their ninth straight win on Friday evening, a 7-6 shootout decision over the Hanover Barons, in Hanover, the Ironmen were handed a 7-5 loss by the three- time defending league champions, Walkerton Hawks at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Things started out alright for the Ironmen on Saturday as Adam Corbett scored a power play marker at 2:11 of the first period to give the Ironmen a 1-0 advantage. The Hawks tied the game at 5:45 and then added three more goals in the period to take a 4-1 lead into the second period. Chris Corbett, on the power play, and Aaron Armstrong, with an even strength goal in the second period got the Ironmen to within one of the Hawks. Walkerton Hawks tallied two goals in the final two minutes of the second period to regain their three- goal advantage. Tyler Kellum tallied a power-play goal at 7:03 of the third period to put the Ironmen down by two. After the Hawks were able to regain their three-goal lead on the power play, defenceman Chase Chapman scored at 17:30 of period three to make the final score 7-5. Walkerton outshot the Ironmen 36-35. Matt Stirling started in goal for the Ironmen, but was replaced by Brandon MacDonald after the fourth Walkerton marker. Ironmen captain Corbett of Brussels said the game was pretty much the type of game they expected from Walkerton, the top team in the league for the past three seasons. “We are going to have to go over our systems at practice this week in preparation of the home-and-home series this weekend against the Kincardine Bulldogs,” he said. “we just got away from our system when they scored their four goals in the first period and their two second period goals,” said Corbett. He stated the Ironmen have not played a full 60 minutes of hockey in a game this season. Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said it was a tough game for the Ironmen, but added that Walkerton is a good team. One of the bright spots for the Ironmen was that they scored five goals against the Hawks. “Our penalty killing was good at times,” he said. “That is something that needs improving.” The coach said they will be working on that during practice this week as well as defensive zone coverage. “We are going to have a good hard practice and get back to what has worked for us, and maybe start another streak,” he said. The Ironmen are in Kincardine Friday for an 8:30 p.m. start time, and then host the Bulldogs on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. The team’s first game was against Mississauga and they came out with a close 1-0 victory on the strength of a goal scored by Miranda Lantz. The girls needed to pull up their socks for the next game against a tough opponent in Burlington. It was another close game ending in a 2-2 tie with goals scored by Lexi Smith of the Brussels area and Ashlee Lawrence. Lightning was not striking the host team Oakville, who handed the Lightning their first loss of the season by a score of 6-1. Lindsey Dales was the lone goal-scorer for Saugeen Maitland. The girls played St. Catherines in the fourth game of the tournament and they came out on top with a 2-0 win. Smith and Taylor Weber were goal scorers in that game. The girls then moved onto the semi-finals. They scored early in the first period with Shannon O’Reilly finding the back of the net and Hailey Herman and Smith assisting, but the opponent, Glouchester- Cumberland scored three goals, the last one coming with six minutes left in the game, but the Lightning never gave up. Herman was able to score a top- shelf goal, but the team fell just short, losing by a score of 3-2. Bantam AA Lightning make semi- finals in Oakville tournament Brussels Atoms win home opener against Milverton Drives The Brussels Atoms have completed their first weekend of action of the 2010/2011 season. Friday night saw the Milverton Drives come to town for the Atom Bulls’ home opener and the home side skated to a 6 - 3 victory. The Bulls scored first just 1:24 into the game when Noah Terpstra bulged the twine to get the scoring season underway. Brussels took a 2 - 0 lead when Jacob Roth scored. The Drives then scored two goals six seconds apart to knot the game at two. This, however, did not rattle the Bulls, as Terpstra took a feed from Jack Pipe to get his second of the game to put the Bulls ahead 3-2 after one period of play. Brussels would not look back as Pipe scored twice in the second with just 28 seconds into the period and then again with only 1:52 left in the period making the score 5-2 after two periods. The Bulls and Drives traded goals in the third period with Pipe completing the hattrick and the Drives scoring with only 34 seconds left in the game. Jarron Thompson was solid in net for the Bulls as the season has started off on the right foot with a gritty win against a tough Milverton team. Not having much time to enjoy their first game win, the Brussels Atom Bulls travelled to Blyth to take on the Bulldogs. Nicholas McArter got the nod in net against a tough Blyth squad. After a hard-fought first period with great end-to-end action both teams were unable to bulge the twine to keep the game scoreless after one. The second period saw the Bulldogs come out strong and managed to get all four of their goals past McArter in the frame. The Bulls had their chances but were unable to solve the Blyth goaltender. The Bulls showed more hustle in the third and quickly got on the board just 17 seconds into the period when Terpstra took a pass from Roth to get the goose egg off the board, then kept the Bulldogs off the score sheet entirely through the third period but that lone goal was all the Bulls could muster. After the game, coaches Pipe and Houston commented to their players on the positive aspects of the game and how McArter stopped a lot of rubber in front of them this afternoon. A good effort by all the players in a losing cause. The Atom Bulls are now 1-1 to start the season. The next game for the Atom Bulls will be at home against Listowel with game time Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Atom Bulls then travel to Goderich to take on the Sailors for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the YMCA arena.
