The Citizen, 2010-10-07, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2010.SportsIronmen remain undefeated with two more wins The Wingham Ironmen are a perfect 7-0 after four weekends of the Western Junior C Hockey League season. The Ironmen led all the way on Friday as they downed the Kincardine Bulldogs 7-4 at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Playing at home on Saturday evening, the Ironmen scored six consecutive goals to overcome a 4-1 deficit as they downed the Hanover Barons 7-5. Tyler Kellum paced the come-from- behind victory with a three-goal effort. Coach Chad Haggitt said the team started slowly against the Barons. However, he noted the Ironmen never quit even when they trailed by three goals. “We kept battling,” he said. “We never really got down.” According to Haggitt, two goals late in the second period and the tying marker in the opening minute of the third period were keys to the turn around by the Ironmen. “We are still not playing a full game, we are not playing 60 minutes,” the coach said. Haggitt said when the Ironmen aren’t playing well, their opponents tend to capitalize on their mistakes.” The coach said the penalty-killing is not as effective as it was earlier in the season. “We will be working on our penalty killing in practice,” he said. As far as the power play is concerned, Haggitt said its effectiveness comes in spurts. Forward Wade Stephenson of Brussels, who earned an assist on the first Ironmen goal, scored by Cory MacDonald, said it was an “awesome” victory on Saturday. He agreed with the coach in that the team is not playing a full 60 minutes. However, he said the Ironmen have been playing with heart and that heart was evident against Hanover on Saturday. He said that teams in the league have talent, but not many teams have the heart that the Ironmen exhibited in their comeback victory. “Heart will beat talent every time,” Stephenson said. Brett Brophy started the comeback at 15:03 of the middle period, with a power play marker. Kellum netted his first goal at 18:49 to put the Ironmen down by one. Kellum netted the equalizer 26 seconds into the third period. Graham Ashcroft, Kellum and Jackson Martin also scored for the Ironmen. Stephenson and Chris Corbett picked up two assists apiece. Jim Hutchison scored two goals for the Barons. Singles were added by Trent Hay, Rob Hellyer and Cory McClinchey. In the game against Kincardine on Friday, the Ironmen took a 3-1 first period lead and never looked back as they skated to a 7-4 decision over the always tough Bulldogs. Defenceman Adam Corbett of Brussels, who opened the scoring in the game, said they had expected a fast game. “This was a hard game to play, because it was so fast,” he said. “We just had to outhustle them.” He said the Ironmen have been able to outhustle their opponents in every game so far. The defenceman, who has nine points so far this season, including the goal against the Bulldogs, said his leadership skills are why they kept him as an over-ager. He carries the puck up the ice and leads the offence. When he is on the power play, he usually leads the play and is the quarterback on the offence with the Ironmen on the man advantage. “They will be looking for revenge after we beat them in a shootout the last time we played them,” Corbett said. “It should be another quick game.” Also getting goals for the Ironmen were Ashcroft, Dan Dery, MacDonald, Ryan Chambers, Chris Corbett and Aaron Armstrong. Chase Chapman and Kellum each collected a pair of assists. Scoring for the Bulldogs were Jared Colling, Hayden Campbell, Paul Stewart and Mike Martindale. Brandon MacDonald earned the victory in goal against the Bulldogs and Matt Stirling picked up the win against Hanover. With an early start, the girls came up against a fast-skating team, but the mighty squad was able to outskate and outshoot Whitby. Jessica Dales was able to get the first point, and after battling at both ends Avery Reeves was able to put in the team’s last goal of the game leaving the score at 2-0. In the afternoon, the Lightning played another Whitby team and while the teams were quite even, it was another 2-0 win. Goals were scored by Dales and Reeves again. Monica Rankin and Cassidy Becker played well in net. The PeeWees travel to Cobourg for a tournament for their next contest.
