Congratulations to Chad and
Candy Haggitt who celebrated their
anniversary on Sept. 26.
The annual Blyth Witches Walk is
being held on Oct. 16 and volunteers
are needed. Volunteers are needed
Oct. 16 to help set up the walk and to
assist along the walk. People are also
needed on Oct. 17 to help take down
items from the walk. Only a few
hours are needed and help would be
greatly appreciated. It is also a great
way for high school students to earn
their volunteer hours. For more
information or to volunteer call Bev
Blair at 519-523-4964.

When voting for the Blyth and
area Citizen of the Year, there was no
debate necessary as all six of the last
Citizens of the Year came to the table
with one name in mind: Jean
Nethery.
Members of the panel cited Jean’s
willingness to volunteer as one of
the main reasons that they felt she
was worthy of the award.
“She makes no public
presentations, goes quietly and
continuously about supporting those
who work for the betterment of our
village,” one nominator said. “Jean
would be an exemplary Citizen of
the Year.”
An recent example was brought up
when the past Citizens met, saying
that an exercise was being conducted
with one of the community groups
that called for the participants to
make a cross face. Last year’s co-
Citizen of the Year, Janis Vodden,
however, said that Jean wouldn’t be
able to do it.
Jean is so even-tempered, she said,
and she would never say a bad thing
about anyone.
Janis continued, saying that only
positive comments ever come out of
Jean’s mouth and that she always
makes the strongest effort to find the
bright side of every situation.
“Jean has been a faithful volunteer
at the Blyth Festival for many years
and has encouraged others to do the
same,” one nomination read. “She
generously offers many people rides
when they would otherwise be
exempted from community activities
such as diners’ club and church
services.”
One past Citizen said that Jean can
always been counted on to be seen atany community event in the Blytharea.
“She’s just a beautiful person,”
Janis Vodden said.
When Jean found out that she had
been voted as Citizen of the Year for
Blyth and area, she said she was
shocked.
“It’s such an honour,” she said. “I
just feel like they must be talking
about somebody else.”
Jean says that she has been
volunteering many of her hours to
the community for the last 10 or 15
years and that she saw a need for
some services, so she thought she
would help.
“I just volunteer when I can,” she
said. “I give people rides to
wherever they need to go.”
Jean added that she has always
been someone who doesn’t mind
lending a helping hand, but that she
tends to do the majority of her work
behind the scenes.
She says that the community spirit
behind volunteering in Blyth is
something that helped push her into
volunteering and that she’s proud
to be a part of such a great
community.
Jean just celebrated her 80th
birthday with an open house and
some pampering with a manicure
and massage day courtesy of her
family.
Also receiving votes for Blyth and
area were Keith Allen, Steve
Howson, Debbie McDougall, Joann
MacDonald and Russell Cook.

In the presence of God
(J.R. Miller, “Paul’s Message for Today” 1904)
“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead.
..I charge you!” 2 Timothy 4:1
Life is very serious!
We are always standing before God who is our Judge.
Our commonest days — are judgment days.
We should learn to do everything “in the presence of God”.This makes every word and
act serious.
If only we were more conscious of God and of eternity — we would live better!

This week at Blyth Public School,
the kindergarten classes have been
working at learning all their
classroom routines. They were very
excited to welcome the season of
autumn this week and went on walks
outside to discover signs that it had
arrived. The senior kindergartens
presented a puppet show based on
the book they are studying called “I
went walking” to the Grade 1/2, 5/6
and 7/8 classes. The junior
kindergartens continued their study
of bears and the number one.
The Grade 1/2 class is reading a
