The Brussels Fall Fair is over for
another year and the weather even
smiled at the last hour. Good work
everyone. To the volunteers who do
the background work, to the
exhibitors, the students and teachers
and the attendees – thanks for
another good year. We are fortunate
to have such a community builder
every year. Thanks and keep up the
good work.Congratulations to Jim Prior, our2010 Citizen of the Year! Many willhave felt the effect of Jim’s talentsand personality over the years thathe has called Brussels home.Children in school enjoyed histeaching methods. Computers cameinto our lives and Jim embraced thetechnology and was a resource to
many at school or from home. The
good work of the Lions’ Club was
enhanced by Jim’s longtime
membership. Lately his interest in
the Accommodation ReviewCommittee process let thecommunity know where his heartwas. Good choice by the pastCitizens of the Year in recognizingJim Prior.Save Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., you’ll wantto check out the “Colours ofBrussels” brought to you by theHuron East Economic Develop-
ment folks. This event is at the
Brussels United Church with music
by Brussels’ Jim Lee and James
Mintz of Clinton. The Goderich Co-
op Gallery is bringing paintings toadmire. Lynne Moreland fromGoderich has some beautiful photosof Brussels and area, all the while a video of our area will be playing. Heather Logan of hCreates has used her graphic design talents to offer somewonderful composites on canvas.Carolyn Parks-Mintz will share
some great stories she’s written
about the people and events
in our town. The “Colours of
Brussels” is an evening to mix and
mingle, enjoy the music, the snacks,
the art and the talents in our midst.

While the panel of past Citizens of
the Year agreed that the field was
stacked this year, in the end Jim
Prior was left standing as the 2010
Citizen of the Year.
Jim Prior received an
overwhelming majority of Citizen of
the Year votes for Brussels and
area and when it came time for
the Citizens of the Year from the
last five years, it was unanimous
that Prior had to be acknowledged.
The reasons were varied, but one
constant was his work with
Accommodation Review process
that involved Brussels and Grey
Central Public Schools and his
eventual work with the appeal filed
on behalf of the citizens of Brussels
and area.
“Jim is a real Brussels person,”
one nomination read, while another
said, “he is totally committed to this
community.”
His participation in the
Accommodation Review process
wasn’t the only reason he
received votes. Other reasons that
were cited as to why Prior should
be the Citizen of the Year were
because he is a past-president
and lifetime member of the
Brussels Lions Club, because of
his teaching experience, because of
his work on bringing a new arena to
Brussels in the 1970s, his
involvement with the Brussels
Lions pool, the International
Plowing Match, his coaching of
hockey and skating and the list goes
on.
“His cheery disposition brings a
smile to every face he meets,” one
nomination said. “He has made
Brussels a better place to live, enjoy
and play.”
The nominator went on to describe
Prior as a model citizen.
When informed that he has been
voted Citizen of the Year, Prior said
that he would feel strange accepting
the award, should it have been based
on his work with the
Accommodation Review. He said he
worked with two other dedicated
volunteers throughout that process
and that he couldn’t have done it
without them.
“The process and then the appeal
was all for one and one for all,” Prior
said.
He is, however, honoured,
saying that he couldn’t believe
that his fellow citizens would
select him for such a prestigious
award.
“It’s a great honour to have your
fellow citizens pick you out of such
an esteemed group,” he said. “To
even be considered is just a really
great feeling.”
Prior said that there are so many
people in the community who work
so hard and that he really couldn’t
believe that he was chosen above
them.
Also receiving votes for the
Brussels and area were Joan Jacobs,
Cathrine Campbell and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
