towards making a difference.
As long as people react with
vengeance the cycle of violence can
never be broken. Martin Luther
King once said, “When you live by
the rule of an eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth, you end up with a
nation of blind and toothless
people.” Think of the growing
number of homeless and unem-
ployed people we have in Canada.
One way to break the cycle of
violence is to be what Mother Teresa
describes as a “now” person.
When an opportunity arises to
respond to someone in a positive
way, no matter who they are, family
or foe, she says, don’t wait. Don’t
ponder over the potential
consequences, just do it and allow
the power of God’s love to be the
judge.
Jesus calls us to love our enemy
because he knows the surprising
power of love that can transform any
situation and make it new. As
Christians we not only believe this
but we are called to live it. Who will
end or at least begin to end the long
chain of violence in our society
today? It will happen one
relationship at a time. It is up to you
and me. Go love your enemy and
watch it happen.
Amen.
